Cricket 1906
M ay 17, 1906. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 139 pletion of his second annual engagement on the Essex County ground last week he went on to Sherborne School where he will act as coach for the next five or six weeks. With ihe veteran Tom Bowley in permanent charge of the cricket, and Lockwood and Hitch to assist him, Surrey just at the moment is well represented at Sherborne School. T he Sutton Club, which this summer has apparently a particularly strong side, will furnish no less than three members of the second XL to represent Surrey against Yorkshire’s second at Epsom next Thursday and Friday. On Thurs day night the two teams are to be the guests of the Epsom Cricket Club, on whose ground the match is to be played. A t one period of the first innings of M.C.C. against Derbyshire at Lord’s on Thursday last week, the appearance of the ecoring-board was as below:— No. 6 Total No. 1 O 1 3 5 35 Wickets 8 Last player 1 Bowler Bowler No. 11 No. 6 Caught by No. 8. It will be noticed that from the figures the number 17 may be made in a large number of ways, by addition. It is only fair to say that the “ first discoverer ” of this curious result was Mr. H. V. L. Stan ton, of the Sportsman. T hirteens are to the front in the diagram given below, representing the scoring board at the Oval when Essex were batting on Tuesday. .No. S 3 Total No. 6 9 5 163 13 Wickets 3 Bowler 4 Bowler 3 Caught 5 Last Player 10 T he batting of Mead and Vogler at the end of the first innings of the M.C.C. in the Derbyshire match filled the hearts of the few spectators with joy. Eich man began with a stroke which has never yet received a special designation, although it is badly in want of one, but it may perhaps be described as a Lne drive over long slip’s head. Judiciously varying ornamental strokes of a some what similar nature by a few which were in every way admirable, they increased the score by 59 runs in 20 minutes. A ustralian newspapers of April 7th state that the Melbourne club team was to visit Tasmania at the conclusion of the New Zealand tour, and that Hugh Trumble would then play for it. From the Australasian of April 7th :— Following the example of the Melbourne Cricket Club, the South Australians are bent upon getting out a cricket coach from the old country. 1 note that the South Australian Association has appointed Messrs. Darling, Scrymgour, and Jtilinman as a committee to make arrangements with W. Mead, the Essex bowler, to come to Adelaide as “ coach ” for a period of three years. A. C. G. L uther , who scored 86 and 113 not out for Yorkshire Gentlemen v. 2nd York and Lancaster Regiment at York, is the Army racket player who appeared with some success in this year’s Military Championships and the Amateur Championships. I t is v^ry satisfactory, to spectators and players alike, that Walter Mead who, on account of a little misunderstanding, has beea all too long out of the Essex team has resumed his place in it. He is still a great bowler, with an accuracy which is like that of Alfred Shaw and Jim Lillywhite, and some of his perform ances at Lord’s this year have been excellent in every way. With this great addition to their strength, and Percy Perrin in brilliant form, Essex ought to have a particularly good season. P errin ’ s batting for Essex on Monday and Tuesday last must have given un alloyed pleasure .to the spectators. His placing of Knox on the leg side on Monday evening, in a very bad light, was perfect, and on Tuesday he hit all round the wicket with an ease which few great batsmen can equal. Last year for a very long time he could do nothing right, but he is beginning the present season in his very best form. If only he were a brilliant field! C. J. K ortright , another Essex man, although he unfortunately does not play for the county now, greatly distinguished himself in this week’s match between Mr. Leveson-Gower’s X I. and Oxford University. He made double figures in each innings, his 40 in the first being the highest score on the side, and with the ball obtained eight wickets at reasonable cost. LONDON AND COUNTY BANK v.
