Cricket 1906
132 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a t 17, 1906. received, six being off an over delivered by D. A. Gee. For the sake of comparison details are appended of the four remarkable first-wicket partnerships -which have taken place in Australia during the past few seasons:— 300 in 100 mins. 352 „ 120 „ 402 „ 127 „ 423 „ 135 „ 200 in 80 mins. 303 „ 102 „ 330 „ 110 „ V. Trumper (335) and D. A. Gee (172); Paddington v. Redfern, on the Redfern Oval, January 31,1903. / V. Trumper (215) and W. Chap- J man (146), Paddington v. Red- j fern, on Hampden Park, \ January 14, 1905. /B. 8. Smith (203 not out) and A. E Angel (162 not out); Union 363* in 100mins. - Brewery v. Hannans North, at Kalgoorlie (W. Australia), v January, 1905. ! J. R. M. Mackay (156 not out) and 197 in 60mins. I A. Diamond (144 not out); 309* „ 87 „ 1 Burwood v. Middle Harbor, at \ Manly, March 31,1906. * Signifies without loss of a wicket. So far as is known in England, Mackay played ten three-figure innings during our last non-cricket season, as follows :— Burwood v. Glebe, Oct. 7 ............................... 204 Burwood v. Gordon, Oct. 28............................... *147 Burwood v. Western District, Nov. 4 .......... *121 N S.W. v. Queensland (at Brisbane), Nov. 11 203 N.S.W. v. Victoria (at Melbourne), Dec. 26 ... 194 N.S.W. v. SouthAustralia(at Sydney), Jan. 8 «105 N.S.W. v. South Australia (at Sydney), Jan. 10 b* 102 N.S.W. v. Australian Team of 1905 (at Svdnev), Jan. 1 6 ............................................. ' ... ... 136 Burwood v. North Sydney, March 17................. 102 Burwood v. Middle Harbor, March 31 .......... *156 a signifies 1st innings; 6 signifies 2nd innings. It is quite possible that he has added to the above list since the last mail left Australia. If, as many believe, the amount of support a county receives is in proportion to the success achieved by its eleven in the field, everybody will hope that the good form shown this week by Essex, in their match against Surrey at the Oval, will be main tained throughout the season. The return of Mead should cause the side to do far better than it did last season, for that he is still one of the finest bowlers in the country was plainly shown by his performances last week at Lord’s. Mr. Perrin, too, is obviously in splendid run-getting vein at the present time. Last week, in successive innings in small matches, he scored 135 not out for Granville (Lee) v. Tonbridge, at Lee, on May 9: 71 not out (retired) for Essex Club and Ground v. Loughton, at Leyton, on May 10 ; and 105 not out for Essex Club and Ground v. Beckton, also at Leyton, on May 11. As he has surpassed all these feats in merit by an innings of 133 against Knox, J. N. Crawford, Lees, Hayes and Gamble, he is fully atoning for the extraordinary run of ill-success he experienced in the earlier part of last season. LONDON AND COUNTY BANK v.
