Lillywhite (Fred.) (See Cricket Scores and Biographies.) Lillywhite (Fred.) The English Cricketers’ Trip to Canada and the United States in 1859. Humorous illustrations. Kent and Co., London. 1860. [A fair price for a copy is 6s., the publication being not nearby so rare as many imagine ] Lillywhite (Fred.) Guide to Cricketers. Annual. 1849 to 1866 ; there being two issues in 1849, 1861, 1862, 1863 and 1865. London. 1849-1866. [The first issue, entitled “ The Young Cricketer’s Guide,” was penned by William Lillywhite, and published by Fred Lillywhite in 1849 at Is. 6d. An alteration in Law VII. induced the publisher to in sert a slip in all unsold copies, and, in after years, this was quoted as a “ second edition.” The Guide proper was first issued in 1850 by W. and T. Piper, .London, Is. 6d., and was misnamed “ the third edition.” In 1858the price was reduced to Is., in 1862 increased to Is. 3d., in 1863to Is. 6d., and in 1864 again reduced to Is. The publication ceased in 1866, and the following year was incorporated with John Lillywhite’s Companion. A complete run of the above is perhaps the most cherished of works in connection with the literature of the game. It has been freely stated that there are only three perfect sets in existence, but whether this is correct or not I am not in a position to say. The value of the books can be judged from the fact that a few years ago an incomplete set realised 15 guineas. The edition for the year 1853 is of especial value, being the rarest issue of the series. Worth 20 guineas the set.] Lillywhite (Fred.) Public School Matches. 1805 to 1852. Compiled by Arthur Hay- garth. 2s. 6d. London. 1853. Several issues. Lillywhite (.lames) Cricketers’ Annual. Edited by C. W. Alcock. Issued annually from 1872 to 1900 inclusive. Is. Lillywhite, Frowd and Co., London. [The earlier issues are difficult to obtain, but a perfect set would not realise more than 50s. The issues most difficult to meet with are 1872, ’74, ’75, ’76, 77 and ’78. Lillywhite (John). Cricketers’ Companion. Annually from 1865 to 1885 inclusive. Is. London, 1865-1885. [The third issue (1867) is called the “ twenty-third edition,” owing to its incorporation with Fred Lillywhite’s Guide, a fact that often misleads col lectors. Known as John and James Lillywhite’s Companion in 1880, and as James Lillywhite’s Cricketers’ Companion in 1883. A perfect set is worth about five guineas; the issues for 1865, ’66, ’67, ’70, and ’75 being most rare.] Lillywhite (John). Public School Matches. Compiled by Arthur Haygarth. 1805- 1867. 2s. London. Originally issued at Is., 2s., and 3s. 6d., with one, four and eight engravings respectively. Two editions. Ackermann and Co., London. 1844. [A very rare publication. A perfect copy, with the eight steel engravings, is worth from thirty shillings to two pounds.] Lillywhite ( William) On Bowling. Dedi cated to the Members of the M.C.C. [The late F. Gale spoke of this book being pub lished in 1840, while quite recently an advertiser, desirous of obtaining a copy, gave the date as 1845. Personally I have doubts as to whether it ever existed. It is quite possible to confuse such a title with Lillywhite’s Handbook of Cricket, which was issued in 1844.] ‘ ‘ Linesman.” The Daily Chronicle Cricket Guide. First issue 1905. W. Bickerton, London. N.D. [Love’s poem is the earliest known publication in connection with the game, and is wortli from two to three guineas, according to issue and condition. The date of the first issue is given as 1744, and was dedicated to Lord Sandwich; the second edition was issued at Edinburgh in 1754 in a volume enti tled “ Poems on Several Occasions,” and the third, dated 1770, was printed in London, and dedicated to the Members of the Richmond Cricket Club, Surrey. A portion of Love’s poem appeared in the Sporting Magazine for May, 1803, Newland’s name being omitted, and Beauclerk’s substituted. It was signed “ J. J.B., July 4th,” and was dedicated to Lord Frederick. A more flagrant example of plagiarism can seldom have been known.] Lubbock (Alfred).
