The second wicket-keeper in an Austra­ lian team does not often have much chance of distinguishing himself duriDg the tour in England, and the chances in Australia who think that Carter is a better wicket-keeper than Newland, but he happens to be a New South Wales man, and, as Kelly is the first wicket­ keeper for the State, his understudy has few chances of coming to the front. Newland, on the other hand, is the chief wicketkeeper for South Australia, and has therefore hadopportunities of showing such a man is to be preferred to others who in a particular match may appear brilliant performers. As a batsman Newland is not attractive to watch; he is one of the stubborn school, who are more popular with their own teams than with spectators. But on several occasions he has shewn his ability to keep his end safe while a more brilliant player has P. M. NGWLAND (S.A.). are that Newland will have no more opportunities of coming before the notice of the public than Carter, who was one of the team of 1902. But a wicket­ keeper is such an important person on a cricket field that no team of any strength which goes on tour cm afford to dispense with an understudy to the great man of the team. There are many good judges his skill in the great matches. Newland is not “ showy ” in his methods, and like nearly all wicket-keepers who have be­ come famous, he contrives to make his work look almost ridiculously easy and simple. His strongest point seems to be consistency; he does not do wonderful things one day only to miss many chances on the next, and naturally V. B. A. GEHRS (S.A.). been making runs. He first appeared for South Australia in November 1899, in the match against Victoria and Adelaide, and made 0 and not out 13. This was his only appearance for the State during that season. In the following seasons 1900-1 he was not chosen for South Australia except in the return match against A. C. Maclaren’s team, when he
