Cricket 1905

IIN) 54 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A p r il 13, 1905. it was quite on the chance the runs might not be got in the time, but no one was pre part d for the sensational cricket that followed. Tancred played another very good and dash ing innings of 85, and in the end was foolishly run out; but, good as his innings had been, it was quite eclipsed by Sinclair, who hit nearly everything sent down, irre spective of the class of ball. His hitting was sensational, and in his 149 (not out) he lifted the ball out of the ground on eight occasions. The rate of scoring can be j udged from the fact that first 100 and then 110 runs were scored in thirty-five minutes, and 172 balls were bowled, and produced 247 runs. Throughout the match the fielding of both sides was very keen, and the wicket- keepiDg of a very high standard, Halliwell being in his usual form, while Davenport for the Army fully kept up his University promise. The 7th Hussars’ Cricket Team went from Potchefstroom to Pretoria and played a week’s cricket from February 20 to 26. The week proved a great success, and no losses were suffered, though the last game, which was to have been against the Royal Horse Artillery, was not played owing to rain. Lieutenant A. C. Watson carried off the batting honours, making 401 runs in five innings (once retired); his hitting was very clean, and his cricket always most attractive. Lieutenant W. Gibbs was the hero in the bowling department, taking twenty - three wickets for under 7 runs apiece, his slows proving very puzzling to the opponents. 7 th HUSSARS v. 2 nd BN. CAMERON HIGHLANDERS. Played on the Pretoria Garrison Ground on February 20. Drawn. At one time the Camerons had 240 runs on the board for only one wicket, Lieutenant Gibbs then took seven wickets for 54 runs. Lieutenant Mitford gave a fine display of hitting, but he was very fortunate in being given several lives. Lieutenant Watson’s brilliant innings came to an end in the last over of the day.
