The death of Mr. Walter Boden has left a gap in sporting and other matters in Derby and Derbyshire which it will be very difficult to fill. Possibly, in his heart of hearts, and it was a very great, good, open, noble and generous heart, hunting and deerstalking took premier places; but his intense keenness to have a county cricket club took practical form some 35 years a g o ; and thanks to his energy, perseverance, determination and generosity, a county cricket club was formed, and has existed ever since. Few are now living who attended that first meeting ; his brother, Mr. Heory BodeD, Mr. Percy Wallis, Mr. Unwin Sowter, Dr. Curgenven, being about the only ones left. However, the club became an established fact, and Mr. Walter Boden was the first honorary secretary, and retained that position for 14 years. From the start, his kindness and hos pitality to players, amateurs or pro fessionals, knew no bounds. No one can ever forget the kindness of their host, originally in Gower Street, and after- waids at Abbot’ s Hill and The Pastures. No county ever had a better friend, and it was always uphill work. The writer can speak feelingly, having succeeded him as hon. sec., and possess ing none of his qualifications, except perhaps keenness and loyalty. How he and I used to be twitted with chaffing remarks such as this : “ Derbyshire comes up to Lord’s with ten bowlers and a wicket-keeper.” But Walter Boden was never the one to despair. He would always say, when the county club was in difficulties, “ When you want £50, you know where to come for it.” Such was the man we have lost, and who is to be taken to his last rest in Mickleover Churchyard to-morrow. “ Men may come, and men may go,” but the memory of Walter Boden . will never fade in the town and county where he has added so much to the welfare, the comfort, and the pleasure of the people. “ Multis ille bonis flebilis occidit.” C. B. F R Y ’S RECORD . By A. J. G a sto n in t h e Brighton Argus. It will be interesting to give a table of C. B. Fry’s batting in first-class matches from the commencement of his cricket career. It will be observed that he has scored 23,039 runs, has put together 71 century innings, his highest score being 244 for Sussex against Leicestershire in 1901. The King of Cricketers, “ W . G.,” holds the record for centuries, having played no fewer than 126 three-figure innings, while ^Robert Abel, of Surrey, is credited with 73. C. B.
