Total (5 wkts) 101 THE HASTINGS FESTIVAL. GENTLEMEN OF THE SOUTH v. PLAYERS OF THE SOUTH. Played at Hastings on September 7, 8 and 9 Abandoned. There was disappointment at Hastings on the first day of this match, for rain was in the air, and few spectators cared to run the risk of getting wet. The wicket was soft when the Players of the South went in, but it was not difficult, and although Marshall was soon out the score was taken to 52 without further loss when a rain storm put an end to play for the day. Hayward was not out 25, and Hayes not out 8. On Friday there were several heavy showers, and it was not until after lunch that the game was resumed. Hayes played good cricket for an hour and a half, but few of the team could make any thing of Crawford and Knox. An unexpected stand by Lees and J. T. Heame for the last wicket added about 60 runs to the total, Lees hitting with great vigour for his 43. Crawford bowled unchanged through the innings, and Knox was only taken off for an over. The Gentlemen went in to bat at five o’clock, but when the total was 28, with Raphael out, the bad light and shadows brought about a cessation of play for the day. There was no prospect of finishing the match on Saturday, even if the weather remained fine, and, as things turned out, it was only possible to play for about an hour and a-half. The game was resumed at ten minutes to twelve. Lord Dalmeny hit three 4’s off Cox, but was dismissed at 61 for a very useful 27. Afterwards wickets fell quickly, and five men were out for 91, of which Sewell made 25 by good cricket. Jessop then went in, and, after three narrow escapes of being caught, went for the bowling, with the result that he made 43 out of 56 in thirty-five minutes. Crawford was playing very well when heavy rain caused the game to be abandoned. P layers o f t h e S o u th . Hayward, c Goldie, b Crawford Marshall, b Crawford...............
