Cricket 1905

S ept . 14, 1905. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 403 Yorkshiremen in different ways, and all through the campaign, save in the Kent match at Hull, the cricket has been remarkable for its brilliance and its recuperative qualities. Into the question of how far the York shire team of 1905 will compare with that which won such great triumphs in 1900, 1901, and 1902, it is not necessary to go. In those seasons Yorkshire had the inestimable service of such cricketers as Messrs. T. L. Taylor, F. Mitchell, Brown, and Washington, and also was able to claim a larger measure of Mr. Jackson’s time. Thus it would be idle to pretend that the personnel of the present team is equal to that of the years referred to, but whatever may have been lacking in ability, has been atoned for, so far as was possible, by effort, and a harder working side has never represented the White Rose than that which left the Hove ground ten days ago. It has been a pleasure to watch its cricket, a delight to see its powers in times of real difficulty, and there can be no doubt at all that the distinction secured has been very well and deservedly won. INCIDENTAL NOTES ON THE YORKSHIRE SEASON. Board only conceded one bye in Yorkshire’s score of 338 at Bristol. Hunter did not give away one bye in Leicestershire’s 419 at Leicester. The 9 extras were 6 leg-byes, 1 wide, 2 no balls. Denton’s 107 at Taunton was the first century of the season. Rhodes’ 201 at Taunton was the first score of 200 in the season and formed his own record. Hurst’s 341 at Leicester is the individual record for the season. Devey’s first appearance for Warwickshire since 1903 was signalised by an innings of 125 at Edgbaston. The Notts total of 39 at Bramall Lane is the smallest total of the year. Devey, Quaife, Loveitt, and Lilley were out lbw, in succession at Dewsbury. S. M. J. Woods bagged a brace for the first time in his career at Harrogate. Rothery’s first 100 in county cricket was his 118 at Bournemouth. In successive innings against Kent, Hamp shire, and Surrey, Hunter scored 11, 38, and 40. He only scored 183 all through the campaign of 1904. Hunter did not give away a bye in Surrey’s first innings of 116 at the Oval. Hunter did not give away a bye in the Notts first innings of 114 at Trent Bridge. Hunter did not give away a bye in Glouces tershire’s first innings of 245 at Bradford. Denton’s 172 against Gloucestershire at Bradford is his record. Rhodes was the first cricketer in England to complete his 100 wickets and 1,000 runs. GOOD BOWLING PERFORMANCES BY YORKSHIREMEN. MYERS.
