396 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. Sept. 7 , 1905. hard thinking that would not be easy to a trained thinker in the more serious engagements of life, and many a captain has finished a match with a sense of brain-fag not to be accounted for in any other way than that he has had to keep his mental faculties hard at work all the time. Nothing need be said as to the physical effect of cricket. No man or boy who does not keep fit may ever hope to be and remain a great cricketer. How many miles does a bowler, kept on during the greater part of a long innings, cover ? or a scout in the country ? or a batsman playing an innings of a hundred P A clear eye, a steady hand, a watchful brain, a cheerful temper, and an in telligent loyalty to the idea of the common interests of the side—these are some of the features of the good cricketer; and to the man who loves the game as only cricket is loved, they will bring a quality and quantity of enjoyment which will serve him well while he is young, and will not be forgotten when his joints are stiff and his hair is grey. F IR S T -O L A S S OOU N T IE S i N ote .—No provision for a tie is made in the rules which govern the county champion ship. But as the rules say that “ unfinished games shall not be reckoned,” it is reasonable to draw the inference that, as a tie is a finished game, it must be reckoned. We have therefore counted the match between Surrey and Kent at the Oval last week as half a win to each side. Per- Plyd Won. Lost Drn Pts. centage.
