THIRTY-FOURTH OP THE TOUR. A REMARKABLE FINISH. Played at Cheltenham on August 28, 29 and 30. Drawn. This match was the first of the Cheltenham week, but owing toheavy rain, no play could take place on Monday. On Tuesday it was possible to begin play at one o’clock, but frequent showers interrupted play. The Australians again won the toss, and made 184 on an easywicket for the lossof sevenmen. The only outstanding innings of the day was the 99 by Darling, who played a wonderfully good game for two hours and a-quarter. hitting twelve 4 ’s, and making his runs out of 167. Although the other Australians were often in difficulties with the bowl ing, he always seemed at his ease, and he made no mistake of any kind. He was finely caught in the long field by Langdon, who had to run for some distance. More rain fell in the night but play was resumed at half-past eleven. The Australians soon brought their innings to a close. The first Gloucestershire wicket put up 48, but afterwards no one except Wrathall, who was batting for an hour and-a-half, could do anything with the bowling. The innings ended soon after lunch, and the Aus tralians went in again with a lead of 58. When they had made 77 for onewicket the innings was declared closedon the chance that the Gloucestershire batting might break down badly. As things turned out the manoeuvre was very nearly successful, but after a desperate struggle the county managed to stave off defeat with the last two men at the wicket. A u st r a lia n s . Drawn, On Monday rain fell so heavily that it was im possible to play cricket at Taunton. In the course of two hours and a half during which play was possible on Tuesday, Warwickshire scored 131 for the loss of five wickets on a sodden pitch. Quaife was not out 44 after batting for an hour and a quarter. The chief question yesterday was whether the Somersetshire batting would break down, but Martyn, Braund and Lewis all played well, and the Warwickshire total of 192 was passed by 40 runs.
