On a bad wicket Middlesex gave a most disap pointing display on the first day of this match. Not that there was anything remarkable in making a total of only 159, for runs were very difficult to obtain, but the batting was tame to a degree, and not in the least after the style which is usually shown by the team. Tarrant and C. M. Wells each remained at thewickets foran hour and ten minutes, the former for ten runs, the latter for eighteen, and as both Macgregor and Douglas were batting for twenty minutes before they opened their score, and did not hasten afterwards, it may easily be imagined that the spectators were not excited. Lancashire did not do very well when their turn came, for when slumps were drawn their total was 77 for four wickets, the first two men, Spooner and Sharp, falling for 6 runs. At the end of the day Garnett played well, and was not out 26, while Maclaren was not out 6. On Friday Maclaren played a great game, and when he was dismissed he had made 72 runs in two hours and a quarter, show ing wonderful skill on a very difficult wicket. Bosanquet bowled fast and met with some success, Maclaren being one of his three victims. Middle sex had to go in against a balance of 32, and the runs were hit off before the lirst wicket fell, Douglas and Warner putting up 51 before the latter was out for 31. Tarrant was soon disposed of, but any hopes which Lancashire may have had of disposing of the side for a small score were dismissed by Douglas and Bosanquet, who increased the total from 58 for two wickets to 132 before heavy rain fell and stopped play for the day, Middlesex being 100 runs ahead, with eight wickets in hand, a very satisfactory position. On Saturday it was impos sible to play owing to continued rain. M id d le sex . First innings. P. F. Warner, b Huddle ston ............................ 23 J.
