Cricket 1905
372 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 31, 1905. for the county during the latter part of the season, give every promise of developing into very useful players. Bignell, as all followers of the game are aware, was at Haileybury, whilst the latter, who has per formed extremely well in club matches in the Southampton district, was educated at Eton, where, like his father, he failed to obtain a regular place in the Eleven. It will probably interest all who follow the game at all closely, as well as those who collect cricket literature, to learn that in the forthcoming volume on “ Cricket in North Hampshire,” which is being compiled by Lieut.-Col. May, chapters devoted to the County Club and to Hambledon willbe included. It wasoriginally intended to issue the volume during the autumn, but the responses to Lieut.-Col. May’s appeal for information from old cricketers and others on the subject were so numerous that it was found quite impossible to place the manuscript in the hands of the printers as soon as intended. The eleventh issueofthe Barbados Cricketers' Annual has just come to hand from the Globe Office, Victoria Street, Barbados, where it is published at one shilling. It is edited, as in previous years, by J. Wynfred Gibbons, and is well worth having as it contains the full scoresof allmatchesplayed by Lord Brackley’s team in the West Indies. The manner in which the publication flourishes makes the demise of annuals in other parts of the world —America, Australia, New Zealand, &c.—a matter for surprise. Mr. J. C. Davis, it is a great satisfaction to know, will bring out his Annual again about Christmas, and very welcome it should prove, for it will presumably deal exhaustively with the tour of the Austra lians through England. Is it too much to expect that some day every Colony will produce its own cricketing record every year ? India might certainly follow the example of Barbados in this respect, for an annual record —comprehensive and accurate—of its cricket would assuredly find many subscribers in this country, if only on account of the large numbers of Europeans prominently identified with the game out there. Warwickshire won by ten wickets. Although Hampshire won the toss and batted on an easy wicket they could only make a score of 238. Sprot hit six 4’s in his 36, and Llewellyn and Bignell both played very well indeed, the former during his innings of 67 having the pleasure of making his thousandth run for the season, for the first time in his career; Bignell’s 53 inns were put together by excellent cricket in an hour and a quarter. Before stumps were drawn Warwickshire made 79 for the loss of two wickets, Fishwick being not out 45 and Quaife not out 28. Owing to rain there was not much cricket at Southampton on Friday, but War wickshire brought theirscore to 282for nine wickets. Fishwick made his fourth hundred of the season, and was at the wickets for two hours and forty minutes for his excellent 114. Towards the end of the Warwickshire innings Santall hit with great power, and among his hits were four 4’s in an over from Langford. On Saturday, after heavy rain in the night, Hampshire could make nothing of Oharlesworth and Santall, and although Ede kept up an end for about an hour for his 22 he could get no one to stay with him. Warwickshire only had to make 49 to win, and the runs were obtained in a little over half an hour by Fishwick and Baker. H a m psh ir e . First innings. Bowell,b Charlesworth ...17 F. H.
