364 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ug 24, 1905. THE AUSTRAL IANS . THE KETTTRN MATCH AGAINST LANCASHIRE. ( t h ir t y - se c o n d o r t h e t o u r .) Played at Aigburfh on August 21 and 22. Australians won by an innings and 69 runs. As Lancashire took the field against theAustralians without L. O. S. Poidevin, A. H. Hornby, Kermode, and two of their test match players, A. 0. Maclaren and W. Brearley, they had practically only an “ A ” team to represent them. The result was a very easy victory for the Australians, but it must be remem bered that a victory over a team of this description counts in the records for just as much as if it had been gained over the most powerful team that could have been chosen. The Australians won the toss and by so doing had very much the best of the wicket, which was easy on the first day when they were batting and difficult on the second day when the turn of Lancashire came. The Australians left out Duff, Gregory, McLeod and Newland. Trumper and Hill, by brilliant batting, put up 165 for the second wicket in an hour and fifty minutes, and Darling afterwards phtyed an excellent innings. The Australians were all out just before five o’clock for 213,and asrain thenset in there was no more play. On Tuesday, Lancashire had to follow on and never seemed to have the slightest chance of saving the game. Armstrong met with great success in both innings. A u st r a lia n s . V.T. When he went to the wickets, Gloucestershire had lost three men for 24, although there was nothing the matter with the pitch, and if he had not been himself badly missed in the slips when he had made 28, the innings might have ended abruptly. Jessop escaped, and after playing himself in with some caution, began to hit with vigour and frequency, finally retiring for 74, after batting for an hour and ten minutes. Afterwards W. S. A. Brown played a wonderfully good innings, making 80in an hour and a-half, and the ninth and tenth wickets added over a hundred runs, Dennett and Huggins for the last wicket making 55 in forty minutes. The two Barnetts only made 37 runs between them, but they kept up their wickets for a long time at critical periods of the game, and thus deserved well of their side. Lees bowled exceedingly well, and took 7 wickets for 93. After lunch Hayward was unable to field owing to rheumatism, and when Surrey went in he did not bat. In his absence the team fared badly, losing three wickets for 38 before stumps were drawn, Knox being run out in the last over by his partner, who unwisely tried to run to Jessop. There was heavy rain on Monday night and Surrey fared very badly, Baker alone being able to make any prolonged resistance to the bowling; he carried his bat through the innings, making 55 by excellent cricket in about two hours. As Surreywere 186runs behindithey were made to follow on. Raphael and Baker again went in first, and at lunch time the score was 47 for the loss of the former’s wicket. Afterwards Hayward and Hayes played a fine game, putting on 80 runs in about an hour. Hayes hit a 6 and six 4’s in his innings of 59, and was batting for an hour and arhalf. Hayward did his very best to save his side and Holland gave him valuable assistance, but Jessop and Dennett had a wicket to suit them, and bowled so well against the tail that the total of the innings only came to 242, although at one time it seemed highly probable that the score would be much larger. Gloucestershire thus had to make 57 to win, and before stumps were drawn they scored 8 for one wicket. Yesterday E. Barnettbatted half an hour for 1 run, and Langdon hit a 6 and seven 4’s in his 47 not out. G lo u cester sh ire . First innings. Second innings. E. Barnett, c Strudwick, b Lees...................... Played at Leicester on August 21, 22 and 23. Worcestershire won by 110 runs. Considerable progress was made with this match on Monday, Worcestershire completing an innings for 286, and Leicestershire making 149 for 7 wickets. The chief feature of the day’s cricket was a splendid innings by H. K. Foster, who in the course of an hour and a-half scored 90, his hits including sixteen 4’s. Cuffe made an excellent 56 not out in an hour and a-quarter. On Tuesday the Leicestershire inn ings soon came to an end. Worcestershire had a lead of 116, and in their second innings made 261, so that Leicestershire had to make 378 to win. Arnold played one of his best innings of the season. Leices tershire made 88 for two wickets before stumps were drawn, but yesterday they failed to keep up this rate of progress on a wicket which had been affected by heavy rain in the night, W o rceste rsh ire .
