Cricket 1905

A ug . 3, 1905. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 317 KENT v. WORCESTERSHIRE. AN INNINGS OF 246 NOT OUT BY It. E. FOSTER. Played at Worcester on July 31, Aug. 1 & 2. Drawn. In this match R. E. Foster and G. N. Foster came into the Worcestershire team, but on the first day they had no chance of distinguishing themselves with the bat, although R. E..succeeded in breaking up a long partnership, which had produced 160 runs, between Dillon and Day. The Kent team again distinguished itself by making a large score quickly, finding no difficulty in the Worcestershire bowling in the absence of Arnold, who is suffering from a bad cold. Dillon played a good innings of 117, which lasted for two hours and fifty minutes, and included a 5 and fifteen 4’s. Day gave another fine exhibition of attractive cricket, and Marsham and Blaker while together put up 82 runs in forty minutes. Going in against a total of 432 at the end of the day, Worces tershire had twenty minutes batting, and were unfortunate enough to lose Bowley and Cuffe from consecutive balls by Mason. The total was 16 for two wickets when stumps were drawn. Worcester shire did so well when play was resumed on Tues day, that Pearson and H. K. Foster increased the overnight score by 187 in two hours, but a heavy thunderstorm then fell and there was no more play until five o’clock, when the situation was entirely altered, for the bowlers found that the wicket helped them. The partnership was broken soon after the game was resumed and for the rest of the day Wor cestershire had to fight for runs. Nevertheless, when stumps were drawn their total was 271 for 4 wickets, R. E. Foster being not out 47 and G. N. Foster not out 16. Yesterday the two Fosters, Hutchings, Solly and Wilson played so well that Worcestershire were able to declare, on the chance that they might catch Kent napping. R. E. Foster played a splendid innings of 246 not out, and was batting for about four hours and three-quarters; he hit two 6’s and thirty-four 4’s. K ent . Played at Leicester on July 31, Aug. 1 and 2. Leicestershire won by six wickets. The Leicestershire men gave an exoellent account of themselves on Monday, being at the wickets the whole of the day and scoring 433. F. L. Fane was not playing for Essex, his place being taken by Benham, a cricketer who has done well in club matches. For Leicestershire C. J. B. Wood and King put up 110 mns in an hour and ten minutes for the second wicket, but after this the Essex bowlers did so well that six men were out for 175. At this period of the game Whitehead and Odell came together. They soon took charge of the bowling, and in the course of a couple of hours increased the total by no fewer than 194, thus placing their side in a splendid posi tion. Whitehead, who made 137, was batting for two hours and three-quarters, and his hits included twenty-three 4’s. Although most of the Essex bow lers suffered severely, Douglas came out with the excellent analysis of five wickets for 85. Essex began badly by losing Douglas and Carpenter for 8 mns between them, and although Perrin and McGahey made a good stand, six wickets were down for 110. Benham and Keigwin then played good cricket and scored 68 in fifty minutes for the seventh wicket. Buckenham also played well, and was not out 27 when stumps were drawn, with the total at 210 for eight. Owing to heavy rain there was no play between lunch time and ten minutes to six. Yesterday Essex followed on, with 218 runs to make before drawing level. Nearly all the team rose to the occasion, but Leicestershire only had to make 105 to win, with' just enough time before them. Lancashire won by 207 runs. Except for a very fine innings by A. C. Maclaren, who played perfect cricket for about an hour and three-quarters, there was nothing remarkable about the Lancashire innings on Monday. Taylor, a fast bowler who has an engagement at Accrington, played for Notts, and met with some success, Maclaren and Sharp being two of his three victims. There was some good cricket when Notts went in, but no one ever managed to get firmly set, and, when stumps were drawn, the total was 176 for 9 wickets. Brearley and Cook bowled very well indeed. On Tuesday the Notts innings was soon brought to a close, and Lancashire then made 305 in their second innings. They began badly by losing Maclaren at 29, and at 31 Taylor boWied Tyldesley and Poidevin with successive balls. But Spooner played a magnificent game, and received valuable assistance from Sharp, who helped him to put up 131 mns in an hour and ten minutes. Spooner’s brilliant innings included thirteen 4’s. Later Hornby, hitting with great power, scored 76 out of 101 in an hour and ten minutes. Brearley had the unusual pleasure of staying in for half-an-hour, and seeing 51 mns put on during that time, although his own share was but three. Yesterday Notts had to make 330 to win, but they failed against the bowling of Brearley and Cook, L ancashire . First innings. A. C. Maclaren, c Payton, b Taylor ........................72 R. H.
