Cricket 1905

J uly 20, 1905. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 279 SUSSEX v. WARWICKSHIRE. Played at Edgbaaton on July 13, 14 and 15. Drawn In the absence of Fry Warwickshire had a much better opportunity of beating Sussex than they could have expected, but they practically lost their chances of victory by taking nearly all the first day to score 211 runs. The only outstanding score was that of Kinneir, who was at the wickets for four hours for his 97 runs. Sussex made 30 without loss before stumps were drawn. On Friday Sussex did some what badly until seven wickets were down, when Newham and Chapman mastered the bowling, and put on 132 while they were together. Chapman’s drives were exceedingly good, and he played most attractive cricket for his 96 during a stay of two hours and a quarter; his hits included eleven 4’s. He was run out through anxiety to reach his hun dred. Newham, who showed all his old patience and skill, was batting for two hours. Thanks largely to these two men. Warwickshire had to face a balance of 117, but before stumps were drawn they knocked off 56 of these without loss, Byrne being not out 34 and Kinneir not out 22. On Saturday, Byrne and Kinneir took the score to 92 before the former was out. Fishwick played splendid cricket for an hour and twenty minutes, Charlesworth hit finely in making his 63 in an hour and a half, and Kinneir was batting for three hours. Sussex were left with the almost impossible task of making 240 runs in iwo hours and a quarter, but they very easily played out time. W arwickshire . Second innings.
