In addition to finding eleven cricketers the Rippons were able to provide one of the umpires and a scorer out of their family. The mothers and wives of the Rippons pro vided the provisions. On the day of the match the thermometer registered 98J in the shade. FIRST OF THE TOUR. Played at Auckland on February 10, 11, and 13. Australians won by an innings and 160 runs. The New Zealanders were at the wicket during the whole of t>.e first day, but their rate of scoring was so slow that only 175 runs were made, their innings closing just before the time of drawing stumps. The only batsman who showed any noticeable ability was Mason, who attracted the favour able attention of the visitors. On tbe next diy—a Saturday—the Australians ran up 399 for nine wickets, every man on the side, except Hopkins, scoring double figures. Trumper and McLeod were the heroes of the day, i.ut Duff and Kelly also distinguished themselves. On the Monday, Cotter, not out 23, and Armstrong, not out 27, brought up the total to 442. ( second of t h e t o u r .) Played at Wellington on Feb. 17, 18 a n d 20. Drawn. On Friday last Wellington, scoring at a slow rate, made 177 runs for the loss of eleven wickets, of which seven fell to Noble. The chief scores were 49 by Cobcroft and 30 by Redgrave. On Saturday the Wellington innings ended for 183. Noble took nine wickets for 64 runs, Cotter three for 30, and McLeod one for 14. Before the close of the day the Australians, finding do d iffi culty in the bowling, made 383 for eight wicke!s. Hill made 95, his hits including a 6 and twelve 4’s ; while the other chief scores were 70 by Duff, including eleven 4’s, and 85 by S. E. Gregory. There was no time to finish the match on Monday, for after the Australians had completed their innings for 433 (Kelly 58, McLeod not out 20) the home team made 214 for nine wickets (C.
