Cricket 1905
Ju ly 1 3, 1905. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 263 YORKSHIRE v. SOMERSETSHIRE. Played at Harrogate on July 6 and 7. Yorkshire won by an innings and 149 runs. The Yorkshiremen distinguished themselves with the bat on the first day of this match, although there was a time, after the first wicket fell, when they seemed likely to make a small score. Three of their four chief bowlers, Rhodes, Haigh, and Myers, had much to do with the fortunate position of their county at the end of the day, but previously H. Wilkinson and Grimshaw had made a fine start of 148 for the first wicket. After this the howling had an advantage of the bat. until five wickets had fallen for 237, when Haigh and Rhodes came together and put on 117 runs in an hour. Rhodes was batting for an hour and a half, and hit eighteen 4’s. Myers played a brilliant innings of 75, which only lasted for fifty-five minutes; his hits included a 6 and twelve 4‘s. On Friday Somerset gave an unaccount ably poor display against the bowling of Rhodes and Deyes, a new player from Hull. Y orkshire . H. Kent won by an innings and 162 runs. Having the advantage of batting first on a good wicket, Kent remained at the wickets all the first dav, scoring 491 runs. The only man who failed to make double figures was Blythe. Seymour and A. P. Day each made over a hundred, the former taking two hours and a half to make his 122, the latter just over two hours for his 105. The fielding of the Gloucestershire team was by no means good, and several catches were missed. On Friday the wicket was nearly as good as it had been on the previous day, but Gloucestershire did very badly. In the midst of the general rout Hale gave a splen did performance in the second innings, making 85 in a little less than two hours by plucky cricket. K ent . Hearne (A.), b Hale ... 48 W. P.
