Cricket 1905

J uly 6, 1905. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 247 YORKSHIRE v. KENT. Played at Hull on June 29 and 30. Kent won by six wickets. The Yorkshiremen have fallen on hard times. They had their very best team last week against Kent, and also had the fortune to win the toss after a heavy thunderstorm had deadened the wicket at Hull. It seemed advisable to bat first, but as things turned out it was not an advantage to win the toss. From the first disasters came quickly, although, thanks to a catch which was dropped before he had scored, F. S. Jackson was able to play a good innings of nineteen. Most of the eleven were quite at sea with Blythe, who found a wicket to suit him admirably, and just before lunch the whole side was out for 77. Kent began very badly by losing Hearne before a run had been scored, while the third wicket fell at 32. Then Day played a really splendid game, playing the bowling with great confidence and skill, and it was largely due to his efforts that the York shire score was passed before the sixth wicket fell. It seemed more lhan likely that the Yorkshire total would be left far behind, but Myers who was tried at third change took the last five wickets for 17runs, and in the end Kent only had a lead of 47. But as the wicket was still veiy difficult and showed do signs of improvement this lead proved to be so use ful that when stumps were drawn Yorkshire with three wickets down in theirsecond innings were still 21 runs behind, so that their position was almost desperate. On the next morning Hirst soon knocked off the arrears, but three wickets soon fell, and with six men out Yorkshire were only 14 runs on. At this critical stage of the game Rhodes and Rothery came together and sturdily set about the task of improv ing their county’s position. Both men played a splendid game and so successful were they that they raised the score for the seventh wicket by 71 runs, and made victory seem possible. Kent had to make 116 runs, and everybody expected that if they were to win they would have to fight with desperation before they attained their end. At first things went very well indeed for Yorkshire, and before he had finished his third over Haigh had bowled Hearne, Seymour and Humphreys. Marsham remained with Day until the score was 31, and then Blaker and Day played with such pluck and resource that they knocked off the remaining 85 runs without being separated. Their display was one of the finest things of the season, for when they came together their side was in anything but a good position, and the York shire bowlers were in high feather. Y orkshire . On the first day of this match the Somersetshire bowling was mercilessly punished, and Worcester shire completed an innings for 534. In an hour and ten minutes H. K. Foster and Bowley put up 150 mns, and by the time that the partnership was broken there was little sting left in the bowling. For the second wicket Foster and Arnold put up 171 in an hour and a half, and the former was then caught at mid-off for a most attractive innings of 180, which had lasted for two hours and twentj’-five minutes; his hits included twenty-nine 4’s. Arnold, Pearson and Cuffe all made good scores, and at the end of the innings Wilson made some very power ful hits in his stay of a quarter of an hour at the wickets, during which he made 40. Braund had to bowl for nearly three hours without a rest. There was no more cricket in the match owing to rain. W orcestershire . H. K.
