Cricket 1905
J u n e 29, 1905. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 231 SUSSEX v. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY. Played at Brighton on June 22, 23 and 24. Sussex won by 65 runs. Weakened by the absence of C. B. Fry, who took a rest, Sussex made but a moderate diplay on the first day of this match. George Brann came into the team again, for the first time this season, but was lbw before he had scored. Sussex won the toss, and after Heygate was out with the total at three, Vine and Killick played a very cautious game for an hour and a half, during which their partnership produced 74 ruus. But they both left at about the same time, and most of the rest of the team only played moderate cricket. Goldie, however, was in brilliant form, and made many brilliant hits on the off side. The last three men were dismissed sud denly, each of them being lbw. Cambridge did so well that they scored 102 for the loss of Payne, and were thus only 110 runs behind. Young was not out 31, and E. W. Mann not out 54. There did not seem much chance on Friday morning that Sussex would be able to pull off the match, for the wicket was still good, and Cambridge had made a splendid beginning. But both Young and Mann were dis missed soon after the game was resumed, and although after Eyre had made a duck’s egg, Keig win and Colbeck put on 93 for the fifth wicket, the tail broke down completely against the bowling of Vine and Cox. Keigwin kept up an end for two hours and a quarter, but Colbeck as usual made his runs quickly, being at the wickets for an hour. Cox bowled exceedingly well. Instead of having a heavy balance against them, Sussex only had to face a deficit of 41, but it was not until five men were out that they were able to start clear by a single run. But Cox and C. L. A. Smith made a most plucky stand, and when stumps were drawn Sussex, with five wickets in nand, were 96 runs on -n ot a very hopeful position. Smith was not out 36, and Cox not out 71. On Saturday the partnership was soon broken, after producing 95 runs. lt was a splendid effort on the part of Smith and Cox, and gave their side a hone of victory, although the hope seemed but small. Chap man made a very useful 31, and in the end Cam bridge had to make 153 to win, a task which seemed easy enough. But the wicket had not worn very well, and Relf, Cox and Vine all bowled splendidly, with the result that Sussex had a fairly easy victory. Colbeck was the only man on the side who showed any fight.
