T he R e t. E. W. R. W altebs . On New Year’s day Mr. Walters, the Rector of Heddon on the Wall, near Newcastle, died at his home at the age of 43. For some years he played with considerable success for Northumberland, and many well-known cricketers of the county attended his funeral. He was in the Ardingly College Eleven at the time when Brann, Newham and Black man made the school team well known and even in those days he was quite up to county form. He was an ungainly bat, after the manner of some of the members of the first Australian leim which visited Eagland, but he was extremely effective, and made miny large scores. He cjuld field well, and might have been a bowler if he had practised cirefully. In May, 1903, the Ardiogly College Aumls said of him, “ Where Walters got his style from, I don’t know ; it was certainly not from anyone at Ardingly. It waj ungraceful an unmethodical; he often seemed in the greatest difficulties when he was reilly quite comfortable, aud opposing teams did not know what to make of him. When they first met him they were in clined to think that his success was due to nothing but good luck, but after a short time they realised that he knew what he was about when he made even his quaintest strokes. He would have been worth playing in the eleven if only for his good humour, which wasinfectious; I am sure that it often won us a match what we seemed likely to lose. If it were not that so many fine players are passed over at the Universities, he would certainly have played for Oxford ; he was quite good enough.” N A T I V E G U M 0 .
