Cricket 1905

206 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 15, 1905. HAMPSHIRE y . DERBYSHIRE. Played at Southampton on June 12, 13 & 14. Hampshire won hy 188 runs. On Whit Monday the wicket was slow and easy at Southampton, but Hampshire hardly made the best of it, and were all out for 263. Derbyshire on the other hand did so well at the close of the day that when stumps were drawn they had made 103 without losing a Avicket. Owing to previous rain play did not begin until a quarter to one. Bowell played a very careful game, which was of the greatest use to Hamp shire ; he brought his score to 101 after a stay at the wickets of three hours and a-half, his hits including a 6 and eight 4’s. Hesketh-Prichard hit very hard at the end of the innings, and drove Cadman on to the Pavilion roof. Bestwick met with success with the ball, but Warren was ineffective. For Derbyshire L. G. Wright scored 33 not out, and C. A. Ollivierre, who hit splendidly, 65not out, their brilliant partner ship of 103 lasting for an hour only. Rain fell heavily during the night, Ollivierre and Wright in creased the total by 48 before they were parted by a remarkable catch by Greig at mid-on. Ollivierre brought his score to 93, and was then caught on the boundary by Langford, who was fielding as substi tute for Hill. Storer and Lawton both did well, but the tail did not distinguish themselves. Hampshire soon knocked off the balance against them of 15, and before stumps were drawn, scored 202 runs for seven wickets. Bowell was playing so well that he seemed at one time likely to make a second hundred in the match, and Sprott, Evans and Llewellyn all made useful scores, Evans being not out 47 at the close of play. Yesterday Evans again played fine cricket, and Derbyshire failed completely in their task of making 247 to win, H ampshire . First innings. Capt.
