The photograph which is reproduced below of Dr. Adam E. Ford would hardly lead one to suppose that its original is nearly eighty years old. But Dr. Ford was born on August 26th, 1828 at Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, and the photograph, which has not been re touched, was taken a few weeks ago. For the last quarter of a century Dr. Ford has resided at Denver, Colorado, and in April last he was presented with a certificate of life membership of the cricket club in recognition of his services to the game in that city. The certificate was enclosed in a silver casket, and the presentation was made by the presi dent, Mr. Walter Fairbanks, the old Glou cestershire county cricketer. The Doctor played cricket manyyears in hisnative county in Canada and sometimes in international matches. He always went in to make runs and to make opportunities instead of waiting for them, a practice which he considers was largely due to his baseball training. His longest measured hit was 154 yards, on the St. Mary’s Ground, St. Mary’s, Ontario—it was measured by Mr. Alexander Niven. In an international match against the States at Detroit, he went in last, his side requiring 68 to win. His partner was Thomas Iredale, a DR. ADAM E. FORD, M.D., LL.D. patient and watchful player from Kent. Dr. Ford’s first ball was a full pitch, which he drove out of the grounds. He also hit the second and third balls out of the ground, the third hit going over an oak tree standing by the fence at the edge of the field. He also made nine 4’s and his side won the match by one wicket. On the next day the Detroit Free Press perpetrated the following :— “ Dr. Ford, in hitting hard, Once drove the ball so high That Arthur Lee Swore he could see The hole made in the sky.” Since 1870 Dr. Ford has played in club cricket and has acted as umpire (amateur) in 1,021 matches. He was one of the umpires in a match in Canada against the famous English team, which included Dr. Grace, the Hon. Alfred and the Hon. Edward Lyttelton, A. N. Hornby, Lord Harris, and E. M. Hadow. In that match W*. G. was caught at deep long leg by Mr. Charles Hyman, who is now Minister of Public Works for the Dominion of Canada. CR ICK E T IN IN D IA . KUCH BEHAR v. FARIDPUR AND HOWRAH.
