JtfNE 15. 1905 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 197 went in. He was by no means in his form of other days, and found great difficulty in making runs. He survived for half-an-hour, and was then finely caught by Lord Dalmeny on the boundary—a run ning catch; he had previously been missed in the long field by Meads. Godsell made seven runs in an hour and ten minutes, and Brown played an excellent innings of 35, which lasted for fifty minutes. The best innings of the day was that of Board, whose 42 included some line hits. At lunch time the total was 144 for nine wickets, so that Gloucestershire were 140 runs on. Then came a heavy thunderstorm, and no further progress could be made with the match. G loucestershire . First innings. R. T. Total CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY v. YORK SHIRE. Played at Cambridge on June 8 and 9. Yorkshire won by an innings and 43 runs. After the heavy rains the wicket at Cambridge on Thursday morning was very slow and difficult, and the University found that Rhodes is as dangerous as ever when he gets a pitch to suit him. Not one of the batsmen could do anything with him or Haigh, and in the course of the innings, which lasted for less than an hour and a-half, there was but a single boundary hit. R. P. Keigwin managed to keep up his wicket for nearly half-an-hour, but he was at last l.b.w. to Rhodes for a duck’s egg. The York- sliiremen for some time did very little better than their opponents, losing four wickets for 30. But Hirst and Rhodes entirely altered the appearance of the game. In the course of about an honr and a- half the two men put on 94 runs, of which Rhodes claimed 46. Afterwards Haigh gave assistance to Hirst, who, when stumps were drawn at five o’clock, on account of the boat races, was not out 56, with the total at 158 for six wickets. The Yorkshire bat ting on Friday was only noticeable for the fine play of Hirst, who, although none of his companions could make anything of the bowling, doubled his overnight score. He did not make his hundred until the last man was in, but in the end he carried his bat for 117, which had taken him two hours and three-quarters to compile. Cambridge were more than two hundred runs behind when they began their second innings, but although Rhodes was this time unsuccessful, Myers and Haigh were in great form with the ball, and the result was an easy victory for the county.
