For this match the M.C.C. could only place a very weak team in the field, but on the first day’s play it was more than able to hold its own. The Leicester shire batting was disappointing. When stumps were drawn the M.C.C. had made 125 for two wickets against the ILeicestershire total of 218. On Tuesday rain stopped^play at five o’clock, when Leicestershire, who had a lead of four runs on the first innings, had scored 23 for one wicket. Yesterday Leicestershire played up finely, and won with ease. L eicestershire . First innings. Second innings. C. E. de Trafford, lbw, b c Liebenrood, b Tarrant C. J. B. Wood, b Dennett.. Played at Brighton on May 29, 30 and 31. Sussex won by eight wickets. Northamptonshire had no reason to be dissatisfied with their first day’s play against Sussex, for although they took nearly the whole day to make a total of 230, against the weak Sussex bowling, they dismissed Vine and Goldie before stumps were drawn, with the total at 54. Thompson, on whom the team relies so much, made a duck’s egg, but took both the wickets which fell. Northamptonshire lost four wickets for 61, but Pool, Kingston and Crosse greatly improved matters, Pool playing an excellent innings. Killick met with great success wkh the ball for Sussex. Killick and C. L. A. Smith played well on Tuesday, and Sussex had a lead of six runs on the first innings. In their second innings Northamptonshire scored 104 for six before stumps were drawn, so that there was a reasonable prospect of finishing the match yesterday. In the end Sussex had to make 168 to win, and accomplished their task with ease. N o rth am pto n sh ire . First innings. Second inhings. W. H. Without Hayward, who was playing in the test match, and Lees, who was chosen among the repre sentative players and then cast aside, Surrey had a weak team for this match. On a perfect wicket Cambridge scored 365, although at first they did so badly that four wickets were down for 92. The great stand of the day was between M. W. Payne and R. P. Keigwin. It produced 205 runs in two hours and a-quarter, Payne playing a brilliant all-round game, while his partner, as usual, was content to keep up his wicket. Payne hit seventeen 4’s in his fine innings of 178. Keigwin’s most useful 89 was put together in three hours. With the exception of these two players the Cambridge batsmen showed no great skill. The Surrey bowling was fairly good and accurate all through the innings. Surrey had to bat for half-an-hour at the end of the day, and scored 28 for the loss of Davis and Hobbs, who seems to be in a transition stage just now. On Tuesday morning Holland was soon out, but Hayes made 38 in a little over half-an-hour, and Baker played a fine innings, receiving useful assistance from Nice. He made his hundred just before rain stopped play for the day, with the total at 277 for eight wickets. Surrey were 44 runs behind on the first innings, but although on a wicket greatly affected by rain they dismissed Cambridge for 122; they had a very difficult task before them when they had to go in to make 166 to win. The match was in a most interesting position when stumps were drawn, for with a wicket in hand Surrey still required 8 runs.) C ambridge U niversity . Second innings. First innings. OXFORD UNIVERSITY v. KENT. •Played at Oxford on May 29, 30 and 31. Oxford University won by 51 runs. On a somewhat fiery wicket, which suited Martin admirably, Kent, thanks largely to bad fielding, ran up a total of 287 on Monday, and got rid of one of the Oxford men for four runs. The only outstanding innings was the 85 of Humphreys, who was missed several times. On Tuesday, Oxford fared badly, and Bennett and Norris were the only men wlio made over twenty. Bennett was missed four times during his innings. Oxford were made to follow on, and did so much better that at the close of
