Cricket 1905

166 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e 1, 1905 of hours, and Hill, Llewellyn, and Stone made use ful scores. , But the side had to follow on, and before slumps were drawn lost five wickets for 148, so that they required 107 runs on Saturday to save the innings defeat. On Saturday Hill played a great game, but when Llewellyn had helped him to put on 130 runs for the sixth wicket, he could get no one to stay with him. Nevertheless, thanks chiefly to his fine effort, Surrey had to go in again to make 71, and lost three wickets before they could claim a victory. S urrey . First innings. Second innings. In the course of more than five hours’ cricket Worcestershire could only succeed in making 231 runs in their first innings, which came to an end just before the time for drawing stumps. Oxford began well enough on Friday, and Wright, Bran- ston, and Carlisle all seemed to find no difficulty in the bowling, but when three wickets were down for 135 such a remarkable change came over the game, that the remaining seven only produced 14 runs, four men falling to Pearson for 11 runs. Worcester shire had a lead of 82, and made 277for seven wickets in their second innings, Bowley and G. N. Foster (who is in residence at Oxford) both playing fine cricket. On Saturday Worcestershire declared, leaving Oxford to make 378. But on a wicket which helped him, Arnold was very difficult to play, and Oxford met with a severe defeat. It may be added that W. II. B. Evans, the Hon. C. N. Bruce, J. E. Raphael, and N. R. Udal were all absent from the Oxford team. W orcestershire. First innings. H. K. Foster, c Wright, b Burn ............................... W.
