Cricket 1905

162 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e 1, 1905. had a very enjoyable time there. Ameri cans are exceedingly keen cricketers, and when a man is bowling he hopes and expects to get a wicket every ball. There is none of the slackness there which one sees in club cricket in England, and men would never dream of rolling up at three o’clock on a Saturday when the game was only to last to six. I remem ber that in my very first match for the Philadelphia club I took five wickets for 19 against the Germantown Zingari. I think one felt the heat more in America than in South Africa, although at Kim berley I have known it so intensely hot that the man who put up the numbers on the scoring board had to pour water over them before taking them up, otherwise he would have blistered his bands. You Eeldom see a man fielding without a cap, either in America or South Africa, unless he is a new-comer. There is no twilight to speak of either at Philadelphia or South Africa, and you cannot play on and on as you can sometimes in England. What surprised me more than anything else in Philadelphia was that although there were so few clubs they could turn out a team strong enough to play inter national matches.” “ Have you coached at any grounds in England ? ” “ I was at Tichborne Park in Hamp shire before Maurice Read went there. It was a splendid ground and a line place altogether. Maurice Read has been there for several years and has improved the ground very much. I have also coached at the schools of Haileybury, Bradfield, and Mill Hill. The boys at Mill Hill School did not seem to take to cricket, although they had a beautiful ground; they were always thinking of football, at which the school was particularly good. For the last few years before I became an umpire in the minor county matches I was engaged by Lord Eglinton, at Kilmarnock. I remember that once while I was there we began a match in June at six o’clock and drew stumps at nine, when it was still quite light enough to play cricket.” “ Do you play cricket now P” “ When I can get away I play for the Heathfield Club at Wandsworth. I was playing for them in 1902 against London County, and Dr. Grace was in the team against us. I had always been very anxious to bowl at him, and I can tell you that I was delighted when, after he had made eight runs, he hit me to mid- on, but did not get hold of the b ill well aud was caught. That was an enjoyable day for me, for I went in first and made 116, putting on 223 for the first wicket with T. T. Brewer.” “ Where did you learn your cricket ? ” “ I never learned how to play. I simply picked it up when I was a boy at DulwicU. I played for any club which would ask me. When I left school 1 began to study to become an artist, but tkiuhing that I should like an outdoor life better, I decided to write to Mr. Alcock at king if I could have a trial at ltie Oval. I had not had any experience of good class pricket,_but when you are young a little thing like that doesn’t prevent you from thinking that you can play. Fortunately Mr. W. W. Read thought there was some promise in me, and I was engaged at the Oval. The first time I played for Surrey was against Essex, and Lohmann and I got Essex out in the first innings for about 54. This was in 1888, my Becond match for Surrey. I remember that when I was playing against Essex a few years later, Mr. Kortright bowled the cap off my head.” W. A. B e tte sw o rth .
