M a y 25, 1905. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAMfi. 151 C. B. F R Y ’S R E C O R D A G A I N S T T H E A U S T R A L I A N S . As there seems to be a general opinion that Mr. Fry has always been a complete failure against the Australians, we have set forth a complete list of his scores, dating from his first match against them. It will be seen that he has scared 1,033 runs against them in thirty-five innings (once not out) and that he has an average of 30. He has scored double figures in twenty-six out of his thirty-five innings. He has made the highest score on his side nine times, the second score onca, and the third score seven times. That is to say in the thirty-five innings that he has played his score has only been below third eighteen times. He has played six innings of fifty and over. The head and front of his offending is, of course, his complete failure in the test matches in 1902, when he made scores of 0, 0, 1 and 4. But failure in three test matches on bad wickets does not necessarily mein that a man has not the nerve for a great occasion. We do not suppose that anyone would consider Clsment Hill as having weak nerves, yet in 1896, when he was in brilliant form, he made scores of 1 and 5, 9 and 14, and 1 and 0 against England, the first four innings being played on perfect wickets—what an outcry there would have been if he were an Englishman ! In the same year A. C. Maclaren could only make 41, and Hayward 38, each in four innings, and Earijitsinhji in 1902 made 13, 0, 2, and 0; and to go a little further back, Arthur Shrewsbury, one of the coolest players ever born, made scores of 4, 13, 4, and 9 against Australia in 1890. Fortunately none of these famous players was judged by his failures, which were all amply atoned for afterwards. It is absurd to suppose that C. B. Fry must be the solitary exception. His record against the Australians will be found below. The figures in brackets show when he was the highest, or second, or third scorer on his side :— Date. Match and Ground. First innings.
