150 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 25, 1905. YORKSHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE. AN ItfNINGS OF 341 BY HIRST. Played at Leicester on May 18, 19, and 20. • Drawn. This was a remarkable match. On the first day Leicestershire made the Yorkshire bowling look simple, and scored 374 lor the loss of five men, one of whom, King, had to retire owing to a severe blow on his thumb just after lie went to the wicket. On the second day Leicestershire only added 45 to their total, bjit on the other hand they dismissed four Yorkshiremen for 37 and five for 58. Here their great success ended, and at the end of the day the score had been increased by 212, and only one more man had been disposed of,-Hirst being not out 187. On Saturday Hirst, receiving effective assistance from Myers and Lord Hawke, carried his score to 311, and Yorkshire had a lead of 96. Then so. well did the Yorkshiremen bowl that victory seemed almost within their grasp when seven ILeicestershire wickets were down in the second innings for 72 runs, but Davis and Odell then pluckily played out time. Naturally the chief feature of the match was Hirst’s brilliant innings. He began to bat at a time when Yorkshire were doing terribly bad, but gradually he gained such a complete mastery over the bowling that eventually he was able to make his side quite safe from defeat, and to give it a possible chance of victory. He was batting for about seven hours, and he hit a 6 and fifty-three 4’s. His partnership with Haigh produced 144 runs, and that with Myers 183 runs. His first hundred was made in two hours and ten minutes, his second in two hours and twenty minutes, his third in two hours. He went in with the score at 22 for three wickets, and made 187 out of 254 while he was at the wickets on the first day. He was last out, and while he was batting he accounted for 341 out of 493. But although Hirst’s innings stands out so prominently, the 160 not out by C. J. B. Wood, the 100 by Coe, and the 58 by De Trafford for Leicestershire, must not be forgotten. Wood carried his bat right through the innings, without giving a chance. He was batting for six hours and a-half, and hit sixteen 4’s. It was a great feat to perform against Yorkshire bowling. Coe, who was not out 98 on the first evening, made his hundred in two hours and a quarter, his partnership with Wood producing 167 ; he played vigorous and most attractive cricket. De Trafford played abeauti ful innings, scoring 58 out of 73 for the first wicket. Despite the high scoring in the match (which pro duced 1055 runs for 26 wickets), the bowling of Rhodes, Ringrose and Gill deserves high praise. L e ic e st e r sh ir e . First innings. Drawn. £ There was nothing remarkable about the batting of Cambridge on the first day of this match, and. R. A. Young was the only man who made over 50. although the wicket was excellent. Against the Cambridge total of 202 Warwickshire put up 76 for two wickets. On the second day Warwickshire occupied the wickets until just before stumps were drawn, adding 384 to their total. Baker played exceedingly good cricket, akn.d after batting for a little over three hours, made his first hundred in county ’cricket. Most of the other Warwickshire men did well, especially Kippey*. Quaife, and WTliittle. May had a good analysis for Cambridge. There was not much chance oil Saturday that the match’ would be finished, and Cambridge very easily brought about a draw. Mann distinguished himself by scoring a hundred for the first time in his career in first-class cricket, his previous highest innings being 95 last year on the University Ground against London County, and Payne and Page played good cricket.
