W. 14 0 74 0 7 0 22 0 2 1 5 0 SURREY v. SUSSEX. Played at the Oval on May 18 and 19. Surrey won by an innings and 184 runs. Without C. B. Fry and Ranjitsinhji the Sussex team can hardly be called formidable, and few people can have been surprised when, in the absence of these two great players and Relf, the county suffered a severe defeat. Surrey won the toss and kept at the wickets during the whole of the first day. At one time it looked as if their innings would pro duce a very large total, for when only four wickets were down the total was 303. To add to the misfor tunes of Sussex, Seymour, who began the bowling with Vine, hurt his ankle before lunch, and retired for the rest of the day. Hayward played a very careful innings,’never hurrying himself, and hardly making a mistake. He was two hours and a quarter in making his first 50 runs, but his last 76 only took him an hour and twenty-five minutes to put together; he hit thirteen 4’s. Hayes played a very attractive innings, and Holland, although he did not score very fast, made some beautiful hits, 52 of his 78 runs being scored by 4’s. The tail all acquitted themselves well. Towards the end of the innings Cox met with great success with the ball. During the night sufficient rain fell to make the wicket help the bowlers a little, and the weak Sussex team gave an uninteresting exhibition of cricket. Goldie and Leach in the first innings, and Vine and Leach in the second, played excellent cricket, but most of the men were quite unable to hold their own against the bowling. Lees met with great success with the ball; he was unchanged for nearly three hours and a half, and always kept a good length. S urrey . Up to the end of this match the form shown by the Essex men this season has been very disappointing. The county was badly beaten by Surrey and Lanca shire and it gave a discouraging displayagainst Notts. Winning the toss, Essex batted on a perfect Trent Bridge wicket, but could only score 244, of which McGahey and Carpenter accounted for 161. Car penter played very pretty cricket and made his 104 in two hours and twenty minutes, his partnership with MeGahey producing 111 runs. Before stumps were drawn Jones and Iremonger put up 136without being separated, the former being not out 75 and the latter not out 55. The partnership was broken on Friday when the score was 154, when after batting for an hour and fifty-five minutes Jones was bowled for 87. But nothing could be done with Iremonger who, having at last got into form was determined to make the best of his opportunities. He received valuable assistance from J. Gunn and Hemingwav, and when he was at last dismissed just before stumps were drawn, his total was 239. This had taken him about seven hours to compile, and among his hits were twenty-eight fours. At the end of the day the Notts total was 508 for eight wickets, and as his side was 264 runs on Jones declared on the next morn ing. The Essex men altogether failed to accomplish the task of making a draw and McGahey alone played up to his reputation. J. Gunn bowled with great success in both innings of the match. E ssex . Drawn. In this match Northamptonshire made their didut in first-class cricket, and had no reason to be dis satisfied with their performances as they made an excellent fight against Hampshire. The play in tho match was very evenly balanced and neither side could claim a superiority when the match ended. Thompson, after playing innings of 6, 6, 6 and 18, at last got into his stride and made 94 not out. East, Crosse and H. E. Kingston also distinguished them selves, while Sprot, Bacon, Hill and Llewellyn were all in fine form for Hampshire. Thompson bowled very well indeed in the first innings. N orthamptonshire .)
