Cricket 1905

146 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a t 25 , 1905. 83 Cond in the Victorian bowling averages, taking 11 wickets for 292 runs, and fifth in the batting averages with 33'14, and a highest score of 164, made against 8outh Australia. In this innings he went in when three wickets were down for about 40, and played a splendid game. In the Victorian match against Queensland he also greatly distinguished himself by making 98, he and Armstrong (who made 200) completely mastering the Queens land bowling. On the whole his record is certainly not inferior to that of several of the members of the present Australian team, and it is much better than some of them possess. Yet all through his career he has escaped notice in the most remarkable manner. It is only natural that since Laver has come into such prominent notice this season his bowling should be lauded as possessing all the qualities which are to be found in a Trumble or a Turner. He swerves, he breaks in an alarming manner both ways, he varies his pace with con- tummate judgment and skill, the ball comes quickly from the pitch and keeps very low when it does not rise above the bails, and does every other thing which is calculated to baffle a batsman. But it is perhaps a little early in the tour to be able to decide whether Laver is the greatest bowler Australia has ever produced, or whether he owes a large part of his success to good fortune. There is at any rate no room for doubt that almost all the batsmen who have hitherto played against him this season have been greatly puzzled by him, and as far as can be seen at present the Aus tralians have discovered in him who will quite make up for the loss of Trumble. lc would be hard to find a batsman with a more unattractive style than that of Laver, but when he gets well set it is ex ceedingly difficult to move him. His progress during the tour will be watched with the very greatest interest, and if he proves to be all that his most enthusiastic critics now say of him, the Australians may indeed be congratulated on their ciscovery.
