Z.), in March, 1896. The latter score is the highest ever made in New Zealand. * Signifies not out.. In Novem ber, 1885, T h e A u stra la sia n stated that Percy M cDonnell scored 309 not out in a match in Sydney at the end of October, but particulars were not given. (V id e C rick et , V ol. 4, p. 478, col. 1). A s two or three^ o f the large scores hit during the past season or two in Australia were not mentioned in the English sporting papers, a few particulars concerning the men who distinguished themselves m ay be con sidered o f interest. Mr. James Charles Barnes, who scored 331 Hot out in a match on the Redfern Oval, in Sydney, on January 14t;h, 1903, was born at Alexandria (near Sydney) on October 16th, 1883. H eight, 5 feet 8£ in ch es; weight, 10 stone. H e obtained his score of 331 not out out of a total o f 529 for five wickets, going in first and carrying out his bat, and . hitting nine 5’s, forty-n in e 4’ s, no threes, Iten 2’ s and 70 singles. H is previous highest 1 scores had been 153 for Redfem Wednesday v. General Post Office, in 1902-3 ; 104 not out for Redfern Alberts v. Marathon, in 1898-9 ; and 102 not out for Barnes and Skeltonv. RedfernWednesday, also in 1898-9. Mr. Claude Stephen Bradshaw-Cochrane, who played a remarkable innings of 317 on New Year’s Day, 1903, is a right-handed aggressive batsman, and was born at Surrey Hills, Sydney (N.S.W.), on December 26th, 1877- Weight, 12 st.; height, 5 ft. 7J in. He obtained his score of 317 out of a total of 498, hitting 16 5’s and 48 4’s. An extra ordinary circumstance concerning the match was that the last wicket resulted in the addi tion of 245 runs to’the score, A. G. Burgoyne (aged 17 ; weight, 10 st.; height, 5 ft., 7 in.) being Mr. Bradshaw-Cochrane’s paitner. So greatly did the latter monopolise the scoring during the partnership that Burgoyne’s con tribution towards the 245 amounted to but 28, all singles! [It may be of interest to add that the Brush Farm Club is connected with the Carpentarian Reformatory for Boys, at Eastwood, which is 13 miles from Sydney. The eleven consists of the secretary to the institution (Mr. Bradshaw-Cochrane), two other officers and eight of the boys.] Mr. Oswald Simon Smith came suddenly into note among cricketers by means of an innings of 307 for Macquarie (whose total was 542) v. Newtown, on the Oval at Dubbo (N.S.W.), on March 12th and 19th, 1904. In his great score he hit four 5’s and sixteen 4’s, the ground being considerably larger than the Sydney Cricket Ground. [Dubbo is 226 milesN.-W. of Sydney, on the Macquarie River.] “ Macquarie were the winners and Newtown the runners-up in the First-Grade Competition, in which six clubs competed.” Mr. Smith was bornatWoolloomooloo, Sydney (N.S.W.), October 28th, 1877. Height 5 ft. 6 in .; weight 10 st. By profession he is a schoolmaster at Mudgee, N.S.W., and since 1895hasplayed inglasses. InNovember, 1903, at Dubbo, he and N. Hives, each scoring 130, made 260 runs together for the first wicket of Macquarie v. Dubbo, after which he took seven Dubbo wickets for 10 runs, performing the hat-trick. He has appeared for the Western District, at Bathurst, agaiDst A. C. MacLaren’s England Team, South Australia, and the M.C.C.’s Team, and, before making his great score of 307, had played innings of 130, 124, 117, 116, 109 not out, 103 not out, 102, and 101 not out. In March, 1904, a capital photograph of the Macquarie Eleven formed the supplement to the Dubbo Despatch. NORWOOD v. HONOURABLE ARTILLERY CO —Played at Norwood on May 13. Norv ood . A. E.
