GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Played at Lord’s on August 11 and 12. Gloucestershire won by nine wickets. On a fiery wicket batsmen were at a great dis advantage on the first day of this match. Middlesex began badly by losing Warner in the first over, while Littlejohn followed him at 33, and Stogdon ran himself out at 41. Huggins was bowling very fast and making the ball jiunp, and no one was happy in dealing with him, although Ebden, who has been discarded by Sussex, played a very sound game for an hour and a half. Eight wickets were down for 105, but Rawlin, Payne, and Hearne im proved matters, and the total.of 171 was not bad for the wicket In the course of the innings Jessop, who already was handicapped by a hand which was badly bruised in the Crystal Palace match, was hurt on the knee by a ball which jumped suddenly just as it came to him, and he was unable to bat until the following day. Before stumps were drawn Gloucestershire made 145 for six wickets, and were thus in a good position, for it was hoped that Jessop would be able to bat on the next morning. Godsell, Hale, and Board all played very well indeed, but tli© Middlesex bowlers hardly made the best use of the wicket. On Friday Board played admir able cricket, aiid adding 79 to Jiis total of the pre vious evening he brought his score to 119, after batting for three hours; his hits included ten 4’s ; Jessop, who had a man to run for him, was at the wickets for less than half an hour for his very useful 38. Middlesex had to face a balance of 119, and against the bowling of Huggins and Dennett fared even worse than in the first innings. Bosanquet and Trott were the only men on the side who played up to their reputation, and Warner for the second time in the match, made a duck’s egg. Gloucester shire only had to make 14 to win.
