Cricket 1905

130 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M a y 18, 1905. ground, and perhaps nowhere else in first-class cricket. Bowler after bowler went on, and did not even derive the satisfaction of being able to say that either batsman had given a chance. Peel was the one man who was able to keep things a little quiet. At lunoh time no wickets had fallen, and the scoringboard showed 168-301-123. After wards the runs came even faster than ever, but at last there was a flutter of excitement among the Yorkshiremen when Hewett put a ball into square leg’s hands and was missed. However, in a few more overs he completed his 200, and was almost immediately afterwards bowled. Palairet continued to bat for some time, and there seemed no parti cular reason why he should not also make 200, but when his score was 146 he was beautifully caught low down at short slip by Sellars.” Since that time Mr. Palairet has played scores of fine innings, and has made many hundreds, but his two most notable performances were against Hampshire at Southampton in 1896, and against Yorkshire at Leeds in 1901. In the former match he scored 292 in six hours and a half, while in the latter he made 173, putting on 222 in two hours and twenty minutes in partnership with Braund for the first wicket in the second innings. This partnership was the more remarkable because Somerset had to follow on with a balance of 238 against them, and it had a large share in the remarkable defeat of Yorkshire by 279 runs in their only defeat of the season. Nearly all Mr. Palairet’s finest innings have been played for Somerset, but he made 71 for Shrewsbury’s X I. against the Australians in 1893, the same score for Mr. Thornton’s X I. against the Australians in 1896, and 54 for Gentle men v. Players at Scarborough in 1898. W. A. B b t t e s w o r t h . THE WANDERERS v. LESSNESS PARK.— Played at Abbey Wood on May 13. L essness P ark . First innings. Second innings. A. S.
