70 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OE THE GAME. A pril .21, 1904 THE COMING SEASON. The chief news of interest in connec­ tion with the counties may be summed up as fo llow s:— FIRST-CLASS COUNTIES. L a n c a s h ir e . — Kermode will be qualified at the end of June. Barnes has been engager! for L»ague cricket, and it is not anticipated that he will help the county. A. C. Maclaren retains the captaincy. Rowlands and Heap are promising recruits. A match will be played b y the county at Blackpool in July against an England eleven. W a r w ic k s h ir e . — The Gloucestershire match is dropped. The home match against London County is to take place at Coventry, while Cambridge TJnivertity will be met twice instead c f once. J. F. Byrne will again be captain. Walter W right has been engaged as coach. The proceeds of the Hampshire match are to be given jointly to W . Richards and J. Whitehead. K e n t . — C. J. Burnup has resigned the captaincy, and is not expected to play at a ll; his place will be taken b y C. H. B. Marsham. J. R. Mason, K . L . Hutchings and S. H . Day may not be able to play much until August. Capt. McCanlis is now in charge of the second eleven. A two- day match is to take place at Maid­ stone in August between Gentlemen and Players of Kent, for the benefit o f H ickmott, the Mote Park ground man. L e ic e s t e r s h ir e . —No news of impor­ tance. Y o r k s h ir e . —The August Bank Holiday match against Lancashire is to be played for the benefit of George Hirst. T. L . Taylor may play some­ times, but it is not thought likely that Washington w ill be well enougb to assist the county. A time-limit match (not in the championship), is to be played with Notts, at Leeds, on May 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Extensive alterations have been made in the arrangements for spectators at Leeds. Lord Hawke will again be captaiD . N o t t s . —The colts’ match b eg in s on Monday next, April 25th. A time­ lim it match w ill be played with Yorkshire, at Leeds, on May 2nd, 3rd and 4th. S o m e r s e t . - I t is hoped that L. C. H. Palairet and H . Martyn will be able to play regularly. S. M. J. Woods is again captain. S u s s e x .— C. B. Pry is captain in place of Ranjitsinbji, who will, it is hoped, play pretty regularly. After a long interval, Lord Sheffield is again Presi­ dent of the county club. Cordingley and Bean have left the ground staff. The Derbyshire matches are to be resumed after an interval of twenty years, but the Worcestershire matches are dropped. M id d l e s e x .— The Whit M o n d a y match at L o r d ’s (against Somerset) is to be played fo r the benefit o f J. E. West. D e r b y s h ir e . —No news of importance. G l o u c e st e r sh ir e . — The matches against London County and Warwickshire are dropped. It is not expected that Roberts will be sufficiently recovered from his accident to be able to play much before the end of the season. G . L . Jessop is again captain, although it was feared at one time that he would not be able to play for the county this season. S u r r e y . — It is hoped that Abel will again be seen in the team. H a m p s h ir e . —The services of Major R. M. Poore and Captain Greig are likely to be available throughout the season, while it is hoped that Captain W ynyard w ill, play regu­ larly. Hopkins is the ground man at Southampton. The Essex matches are dropped. E. M. Sprot is again captain. E s s e x —The Hampshire and second eleven matches are dropped. C. J. Kortright has resigned the captaincy. Alfred Sbaw and Peel have been engaged by Mr. C. E. Green to coach the team at the end of the month. The entrance fee for members has been abolished. W o r c e st e r sh ir e . —The Sussex matches are dropped. H. K . Foster will again be captain. The services of Captain W . L. Foster will not be available. o th er f ir s t - class c l u b s . M .C .C .—The old match, Gentlemen of England v. I Zingaii, is to be revived in June. The first match this year at Lord’s (against London County) begins on Monday, May 2nd, two days before the general meeting. Great efforts have been made to improve the conditions of the ground at L-ird’s, and it is hoped that this year the wickets will again be good. L o n d o n C o u n t y . —N o news of impor­ tance. O x f o r d U n iv e r s it y . —W. H . B. Evans, the captain, will have seven old Blues to choose from. The home match with Surrey has been dropped, and Yorkshire will be played at Oxford in its place. C a m b r id g e U n iv e r s it y . — F. B. Wilson is the new captain. In addition to him four old Blues will be available. It is probable that after the ’Yarsity match the team will play two matches against Ireland, one at Dublin, and the other at Cork. SECOND DIVISION. W il t s h ir e . —T. N. Perkins will be able to play. N orthamptonshire will be met for the first time, while the Monmouthshire matches will be dropped. Y o r k s h ir e II .—R . W . Frank will again be captain. B e d f o r d s h ir e . —Matches will be played against Durham and Northumber­ land instead of Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire. B e r k s h ir e . —No news of importance. S u r r e y II .—No news of importance. B u c k s . —Matches against Norfolk have been added to the list. P . J. de Paravicini is again captain. The loss of Nash will make a great difference to the strength of the team. C a m b r id g e s h ir e . —The matches against Bedfordshire, Northumberland, Staf­ fordshire and Durham are dropped, while the county will play Norfolk, Cornwall, Herts and Suffolk instead. The matches do not begin till nearly the end of July. D u r h a m . —The matches with Cambridge­ shire are dropped, while Bedford­ shire will be met for the first time. H e r t f o r d s h ir e . —No news of import­ ance. D e v o n s h ir e .— No news of importance. M o n m o u t h s h i r e .— Matches will be played against Cornwall instead of Wiltshire, while Staffordshire have been placed on the list. N o r t h a m p t o n s h i r e . —The matches against Herts and Yorkshire 2nd have been dropped, and instead of them the county will play Wiltshire and Staffordshire. Tnorueycroft has left the ground staff, C o r n w a l l . —The county takes part in the competition for the first time, aud has arranged matches against Dorsetshire, Devonshire, Cambridge­ shire and Monmouthshire. S t a f f o r d s h ir e . —I t is expected that Barnes, the Lancashire player, will assist the county this season. W . Attewell has been engaged as coach for the beginning of the season. O x f o r d s h ir e . —A ll the matches will take place during August. Wakelin will not be available. Mr. H. M. Turner is succeeded as honorary secretary by Mr. F. C. Bridson. N o r f o l k . —The county will resume their place inthe competition. S u f f o l k .— The county will enter the competition,having arranged matches with Oxfordshire, Norfolk, Cam­ bridgeshire, and Staffordshire. H. F. Fox, the old Somersetshire cricketer, is captain, and it is ex­ pected that Baldwin, the old Surrey professional, will play after July. D o r s e t s h ir e . —R. S.
