[ tw e n tieth , and last , of th e tou r .] Played at Adelaide on March 12,14, and 15. M.C.C. won by nine wickets. The M.C.C. were considerably weakened in being obliged to enter the field without Hayward, who had been left behind in Melbourne owing to his attack of tonsilitis. After being considerably in arrears when the match was half over, it was a capital per formance on the part of the visiters to win by so large a margin as nine wickets. The feature of the opening day’s play was the batting of Gehrs, who gave but one chance in scoring 63 out of 116 in less than two hours. At times he hit extremely well, and off one over from Braund obtained fourteen runs. He had, however, one great piece of luck, Rhodes catching him magnificently with the left hand at deep-square-leg off Braund, but the catch being disallowed because the fields man was at the time standing on the cycle- track. Claxton gave a stylish display, and Newland hit hard, scoring 50 out of 66 in 35 minutes without giving a chance, but Pellew —one of the very few cricketers to exceed the 100 in each innings of a club-mateh in Australia—wras not seen to advantage. When stumps were drawn for the day England had made but nine runs for the loss of Foster’s wicket in response to South Australia’s total of 259. On the Monday bowlers were very busy, and scores consequently small. Both Warner and Braund played very useful innings, the former making 50 out of 106 obtained whilst in, but the M.C.C. were 105 in arrears on the first innings. When the home side went in the second time, only Gehrs met the bowling with any confidence, and the small total of 77 was the result. Braund bowled in his best form, his length being irreproachable, and his efforts were backed up by some splendid fielding. At times during the tour his bowling was obviously not so effective as anticipated, but in the last two matches—against Australia, at Melbourne, and South Australia, at Ade laide—he showed his best form. On the last day of the match the M.C.C. made light of their task, obtaining 181 for the loss of but a single wicket. Warner and Foster placed the result beyond doubt by scoring 117 together for the first wicket, and the latter and Tyldesley, who hit brilliantly, secured the remaining runs. Warner made 54 out of 117 in 85 minutes, Foster 73 not out, out of 184 in 110 minutes, and Tyldesley 50 not out, out of 67 in 25 minutes. Foster hit nine 4’s, and Tyldesley eight. The second innings of the Englishmen lasted but 110 minutes, and the last 70 runs were obtained in a drizzling rain. ‘ ‘ It was a glorious victory.” S outh A u str a lia . First innings.
