Cricket 1904

Sept. 22, 1904. OKICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 429 Crawford did great things at the end of theseasonandshowed muchpromise, but he had a good many bowlers’ wickets at his disposal, and it would be rash to expect him to prove another Lohmann. Schwarz, another fine bowler, is a South African. Blythe has not fallen off. Hesketh-Prichard would without doubt have had a much better average if he had played for a strong countyinsteadof forHampshire. W. C. Smithdidwell on sticky wickets, and Cox and Lee3 came well to the front. Of course, some of the men who were so good a fewyears ago may come on again next season, but if they do not the selection committee for the test matches will need sympathy. Many cricketers saw, in the continued increase in the number of first-class matches, the doom of the fast bowler, for they said that fast bowlers would not be able to stand the strain of so much cricket. Be this as it may, where arethe Richardsons, Lockwoods, Molds and Woodcocks of yesterday ? Let us hope that among some of the younger genera tion of bowlers there will be found another Peate, or Lohmann, or Alfred Shaw, or A. G. Steel, even if wemaynot look for another Richardson orMold. It has not been an eventful season. The visit of the South African cricketers was most interesting but not in the least exciting, for although the tourists won most of their matches and were un doubtedly a strong team, they did nothing sensational. The county cham pionshipwaspracticallydecidedinfavour of Lancashire so long before the season came to an end, that nothing short of a miracle performed by another county would have aroused the cricket public to enthusiasm. There were no new laws to discuss and noold ones seemed torequire alteration, although in connectionwith a match at Lord’sand another at the Oval, the law about substitutes was played with for a few days. One of the few interesting features of the seasonwas the sudden rush of amateurs into the field of cricket journalism; but itwas interesting only for atime, except to afew fortunate collectors of curiosities, who had a gold mine at their disposal.
