Cricket 1904
S ept . 15, 1904. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 413 CHAMPION COUNTIES. By A l f r e d D. T a y l o r . Prom 1873 to 1886 the smallest number of lost games decided the championship. Daring 1887-8-9 a win oounted one point, a draw half a point. From 1890 to 1894 losses were deducted from wins and drawn games ignored. The present system for deciding the- order of merit was adopted in 1895. No county has won all its matches in one season, though Gloucestershire (three times), Notts (three times), Middlesex (twice), Lancashire (twice), and Derby shire (once), have each gone through a season without suffering defeat. On the other hand Derbyshire in 1884 and 1887, and Kent in 1875 lost every match ; while Middlesex in 1875 and 1877, Sussex in 1877 and 1830, Derbyshire in 1886 and 1901, and Hampshire in 1900 failed to achieve a single victory though they played one or more drawn games. Derbyshire is the only county that has occupied each end of' the championship table; in 1874 they did not lose a match, in 1901 Ihey did not win a match. Year. Winners.
