BOMBAY GYMKHANA v. POONA GYMKHANA. The Bombay team had an easy victory in this match played in Bombay on August 12 and 13. In spite of the fine batting of Cap tain Greig, who scored exactly one half of Poona’s aggregate runs from the bat, Bom bay won with ten wickets to spare. Milne’s all-round cricket had a good deal to do with Bombay’s success. His eight wickets only cost 73 runs. P o o sa G y m k h a n a . First innings. Capt.J.G.Greig.b L.Carroll 108 A. D. NORTH v. SOUTH. Played at Scarborough on September 5, 6 & 7. Abandoned. This match took the place of Rest of Eng land v. the M.C.C. Australian team, which was given up because of the difficulty of getting the touring team together. As a South of England team was playing at Hast ings against the South Africans, it was not very easy to get together another team under the same title, but for all that the eleven which represented the South was fairly strong, although quite unrepresentative. During the first day’s play the North scored 241, while the South made 97 for four wickets. Uhere were no outstanding innings on the North side, but Wilkinson, Denton and J. Gunn made good scores, while most of the team made double figures. Bosanquet, who went on as first change, again met with great success with the ball. South of Eng land did not make much headway for some time after they went in, but when four wickets were down for 57 C. L. Townsend and Relf came together and played out time, the former being not out 32 and the latter not out 20. On Tuesday, the rain which pre vented any play at the Oval and caused the match at Hastings to be adjourned after less than an hour’s play, did not put in an appearance at Scarborough. Townsend and Iielf, who were not out overnight, played fine cricket, and before they were separated their partnership had produced 111 runs. Towns end was batting for an hour and three- quarters for his 65, while Relf, whose fine 84 included a six and fouiteen 4’s, was at the wickets for two hours. After this there was a breakdown in the batting. The North had to go in against a balance of five, and before stumps were drawn scored 260 for six wickets, 80 that they ended the day with a lead of 255 and four wickets in hand. Denton played delightful cricket for an hour and twenty minutes, while Hirst was in splendid form. For the last forty minutes of the day he and Rhodes were together. They put on 79 runs in that time, and when stumps were drawn Hirst was not out 84 and Rhodes not out 43. Yesterday rain made its appearance at Scar borough, and a shower delayed play until a few minutes to twelve. Hirst hit very hard, and in a quarter of an hour he and Rhodes put on 44 more runs. He then played on with his total at 112, for which he had been at the wickets for two hours and a quarter; his hits included fourteen 4’s. Thompson bowled Smith and Haigh in successive overs, but Rhodes held his own until the innings was declared closed. The South had to make 327 to win with three hours and a half before them, but when 42 runs had been scored for one wicket rain fell heavily and the match was abandoned. N orth . First innings.
