Cricket 1904

S e pt . 1, 1904. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 381 total of 28S for nine wickets. The best innings was the 89 by Alec Hearne, although he was really out, caught at long slip by Relf, when his score was 66. But an appeal was made, and fortunately for the batsman neither umpire was able to see what had happened. Hearne made his runs out of 194 in three hours and three-quarters. Nearly all the other Kent batsmen made useful scores, but on the whole the cricket was not very exciting. The Kent score was only increased by four on Tuesday and then Sussex began so well with Fry and Vine that when the former was caught at slip 85 runs had been put up in an hour. Fry’s innings was most attractive to watch. From this time things went badly with Sussex. K il lick was bowled first ball, and with another run added Vine was caught by the wicket keeper, who was standing back to Fielder. Thus three of the best wickets fell in a few minutes. Ranjitsinhji was playing a pretty game when a very difficult chance to Mar sham at cover-point was finely taken, although in making the catch Marsham severely injured his hand. Heygate did his best for his side by stubbornly defending his wicket, and his five runs took forty minutes to put together. Relf and C. L. A. Smith both played well but in the end Sussex were 70 runs behind. When stumps were drawn the Kent score in the second innings was 67 for one wicket, so that the visitors were 127 runs on and in an excellent position. There was no play yester day owing to heavy rain. K en t . Hearne (A..), run out 89 Humphreys, c Kaojit- siohji, b K eif..........18 S.H.Day,c Cox, b Eelf 12 E. W. YORKSHIRE v. M.C.C. & GROUND. Played at Scarborough on August 29, 30 & 31. Drawn. For this match the M.C.C. were able to put a really powerful team in the field, although bowling was not its strongest point. ¥ orkshire had the good fortune to bat first on an exceedingly easy wicket, and before stumps were drawn on Monday they ran up a score of 435 for nine wickets. The chief credit of this belongs to the Hon. F . S. Jackson and Wilkinson, who, going in first, wore down the bowling until there was not much “ devil ” left in it. They put up 146 for the first wicket in about an hour and a half, and seemed to find all the bowling easy enough. After lunch Denton played a most attractive innings and the second wicket did not fall until the total had been increased by 115 in an hour and ten minutes. Wilkinson was then dismissed after playing his highest innings of his career in first-class cricket. The total was 271 when he was out, and at 283 Denton and Tunnicliffe both fell. Rhodes was missed at point before he had scored, and Hirst, who played a brilliant innings, was twice missed in an over off Spooner’ s lobs. On Tuesday, 40 runs were added to the Yorkshire total in twenty minutes. Warner and Spooner made runs so quickly for the M.C.C. that at the end of half an hour 50 went up, but with the total at 62 Spooner was bowled. At lunch time the score was 97 for one wicket, and it was not until the total was 129 that the second wicket fell. A sudden change in the fortunes of the game occurred when at 149 Haigh went on to bowl for the second time during the innings, for he was in such fine form that he took six of the remaining seven wickets for 40 runs. Townsend was out fifth after showing excellent cricket for an hour and a half for his 51. The M.C.C. had to follow on, and in the thirty-five minutes which remained for play scored 53 without losing a wicket before stumps were drawn, Warner being not out 22 and Spooner not out 31. There was some remarkable cricket yesterday. The wicket was easy after a few showers in the early morning, and the game was resumed soon after twelve o’clock. Spooner played brilliant cricket, and made many fine hits, including a six. He was out first, having scored 93 out of 144 by the most attractive cricket imaginable. Warner con tinued to play a fine game, and alter being at the wickets for two hours and three-quarters he reached his hundred. The bowling was completely collared, and towards the end of the day Maclaren made hay of it, playing a delightful innings. Y o r k sh ir e . Haigh, b Thompson .. 13 E.
