S e p t . 1, 1904. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 375 WORCESTERSHIRE v. LEICESTER SHIRE. Played at Worcester on August 25, 26 & 27. Drawn. At no stage of the game was there much chance that this match wou’d be finished. The two sides were nearly on an equality and there was never much to choose between them. On the first day Leicester shire made 67 for one wicket agaiost ‘220 of their opponentp. On the second day Worcestershire ended with a leal <f 46 and nine wickets in hand in their second innings, and on the third day Leicestershire were Itft to make 300 to win in a couple of hours. Pearson, Bowley and H. K. Foster distinguished themselves with the bat for Worcestershire, while for Leicestershire, Wood, Joyce, Whitehead, De Trafford and Gill all did well. In the Leicestershire second innings De Trafford made 57 out of 99 in an hour. W o rcestersh ire . First innings. Second inniogs. Hirst and Tunnicliffe both hit well, and the former made four 4’s cff successive balls from Robson. At about four o’clock Lord Hawke was able to declare the innings closed, Rhodes being then not out 49. Somerset had to bat for an hour and three-quarters, and although Palairet played a beautiful innings, the side faied 83 badly that when it was time for drawing s'umpi it was decided to finish the match that evening if possible. But Poyntz and Lee batted so well for the ninth wicket that after all it was necessary to wait until the next morniog. When stumps were drawn Lee was not out 27, and Poyntz not out 17, and the total 159 for seven wickets, so that Somerset still required 204 to save the inniogs defeat. On Saturday the two not outs added 38 runs, their entire partnership producing 80 runs in an hour and ten minutes. It was an exceedingly plucky effort, and it is a pity that it came too late. 8 o m h rset . HAMPSTEAD v. CHARLTON PARK.—Played at Hampstead on August 24. SOMERSET. Played at Taunton on August 25, 26, and 27. Yorkshire won by an innings and 152 runs. The Yorkshiremen were seen to great advantage in this match. On the first day they got rid of Somerset on a very good wicket for 109, and made 146 for the loss of only two men. The Somerset batting was so weak as to surprise everybody, including them selves, but theYorkshiie fielding was brilliant and the bowling excellent. When Yorkshire went in Haigh, who required 69 runs to complete his thou sand runs, went to the wickets first with Grimshaw and before he was dismissed his total was 81. He was out just before rain stopped play, and was batting for an hour and a half. Denton was not out 4? which had taken him a little over half an hour to put together. On Friday Somersetshire were com pletely outplayed. Ail the Yorkshiremen who went in made runs quickly, and the bowling was very soon mastered. Denton, who had a very narrow escape of being run out when he had scored 99 played a most attractive game, his fine innings of 111 including nineteen fours : in an over of Braund’s F. M.
