Cricket 1904

364 CRICKET: A WEEKLY EECORD OF THE GAME. A ug . 25, 1904 I t will be a matter for general regret that circumstances should have arisen to necessitate the abandonment of the match between the M .C.C. Australian team and the Rest of England arranged as the closing engagement of the Scar borough Festival, particularly in view of the indecisive character of the previous game at Lord’s. Happily the cricket itself is not likely to suffer, at all events, to any great extent. The time-honoured fixture of North and South, which will take the place of the Australian and England match on the bill, is, indeed, sure to provide plenty o f interest for the sport-loving folk who w ill throng the cricket ground at Scarborough during the next fortnight. The charm of these later cricket gatherings is that one sees thepick of English players in friendly rivalry, freed moreover from the restraints and anxieties of the more strenuous cricket of the County Championship. In what is termed holiday cricket there is a sense of relief which is not without its enjoyment. T h e follow ing is a short extract from some verses entitled “ What Ronald wants to be,” in T. P .’s W eek ly :— When Ronald was a tiny hoy He said, “ I want to he A great and mighty cricketer For all the world to see ; To play in matches at Trent Bridge, And pile up scores for Notts, Till every Evening News contains The name of Honald Watts ! “ 1 want to be a vicar, to o ; I want to have a wife Who’ll play at cricket every day With me for all our life ! W e’ll have a great big garden-place ; No flowers shall there be found ; I ’ll dig them up and make instead A ripping cricket-ground! “ W e’ll live on ices and brown tread, Because they make you strong ; Of course I ’ll have to preach sometimes, But sermons don’t take long. I ’ll write them in the intervals, And never go and see No people in the parish—why, They’ll come and clap for m e !” PELHAM v. STAG BREWERY. — Played at Chiugford on August 20. S tag B b s w e b y .
