Played at Bristol on August 11 and 12. Gloucestershire won by 67 runs. Not so very long ago Gloucestershire could do nothing which was right; now their very opponents play into their hands. Thus H. K. Foster on winning the toss for Worcestershire, decided to give Glouces tershire the chance of batting first, and without much doubt lost the match because of his action. The wicket was always in favour of the bowlers, and the play was from first to last of great interest. On the first day there was very little to choose between the teams, for although Gloucestershire had a lead of 18 on the first innings, they lost Wrathall and Langdon in the second for 28. The only outstanding innings of the day was the f 8 not out by C. O. H. Sewell, but this was worth going a long way to see. His runs were made in an hour and a half out of a total of 103 while he was at the wickets. On Friday Jessop gave his side a fine send-olf by scoring 43 out of 63 in thirty-five minute*, and Brown played an admirable game which had much to do with the success of his side. Worcestershire had to make 220 runs to win, and although Bowley and Pearson put up 65 for the first wicket, four men were out for 94 From tiiis time Gloucestershire always looked like winning. Their opponents played with too much steadiness to be able to hope for success, for what was wanted was some bold hitting to turn the Beale. The match was over on Friday at a quarter past six. Dennett bowled exceedingly well in both innings. G loucestershire . First innings. F. H.B. Champain, c Burns, b Keene ........................ 0 Wrathall, not out................. 8 G. L. Played at the Oval on August 11, 12 and 13. Drawn. Owing to persistent rain all the morning it was not found possible to begin this match until Friday last, when Surrey won the toss and batted on a wicket '‘ hich for a time helped the bowlers a good deal. Surrey made a very bad commencement, and with only 20 runs up Raphael, Bayes and Abel were all out, the two latter to brilliant catches. Meanwhile, Hayward whs playing a steady game, and when he was joined by Crawford the two men played so well that a long partnership seemed probable. But a misunderstanding, for which he could not Ve blamed, led to Crawford’s downfall, run out. when he had helped to increase the total by 43. Hayward con tinued to play very safe and very sound cricket, until he was beaten by Killick; he was battiDg for three hours and a quarter, and but for his determined stand the total of the innings might have been alarmingly small. The last two men, Nice and Stedman, made a fine stand for the last wicket, and added 46. The Sussex batting was not particularly attractive, for Fry was not at his best until towards the end of his innings, while Ranjitbinbjirun himself out with his total at 8. When stumps were drawn the score was 134 for three wickets, Fry not out 82, and Heygate not out 15. There was thus very little chance when the game was resumed on Saturday that the match would be finished. The complete partnership between Fry and Heygate produced 108 runs in an hour. Another partnerahip followed between Heygate and Latham accounting for 77 runs, after which Nice and Lees quickly finished off the innings. Fry missed scoring his tenth hundred of the season by three runs only; he was at the wickets for three hours and ten minutes, but was hardly as much master of the situation as usual. Surrey, with three hours before them, went in with a balance of 71 against them, and when Davis and Hayward had put up 61 for the first wicket, and Hayward and Hayes 48 for the second, it was morally certain that the game would be drawn. Hayward again played a great game, while Hayes, Abel, Crawford, and Holland all did well. First innings. Hayward, b Killick ... J. E. Raphael, b Relf... Hayes, c and b Cox ... Abel, c Fry, b Relf ...
