Cricket 1904
340 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, A u g . 18, 1904. his enforced absence weakened the Lan castrians immensely, and the latter cannot be blamed if they complain that for once fortune did not favour them. Having said this, however, one must acknowledge that as far as the match went Middlesex showed the finer cricket, and fully merited the success which must have awaitad them but far the weather which came to Lancashire’s assistance. Gr. W . Beldam’s chanceless innings was the most prominent feature of a match which will always be referred to with vivacity by those who were fortunate enough to witness it. It was a struggle between the present and the probable champions, in which the former proved the better side. Warwickshire provided a week’s curious cricket in their matches against Surrey and Yorkshire; in the former game the play was extremely dreary, whilst in the latter it was interesting from start to finish. Nobody who saw the eleven perform at the Oval would, for a moment, have considered it likely to defeat Yorkshire on a queer wicket, but it would, nevertheless, be unfair to acknow ledge that Warwickshire quite deserved their victory. The fact that it was the first occa sion upon which they had defeated Yorkshire since their promotion to first-class rank will render the match historical in Warwickshire annals. It is quite possible that the result of the match will prevent Yorkshire from head ing the list of counties at the conclusion of the season. CAMBRIDGESHIRE v. SUFFOLK.
