A ug . 11, 1904. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD O f THE GAME. 331 R a n j it s in h j i has often shown that he can play a brilliant uphill gam e--even against Australian bowlers on a difficult wicket— but perhaps he has never done anything better than his splendid efforts against Lancashire this week. In the first innings he alone of all the Sussex men was able to play the bow ling with confidence, and he followed up his innings of 99 by another of 203 not out. In both innings his county was in a desperate position when he went to the wickets. O n e of the drawn games which are sd teanbl* to many cricketers was brought about at Leyton on Tuesday. If it had been arranged to play the match to a finish there would have been no interest in it at all on the second day, but as it was, the excitement was kept up until the last moment. There were still ten minutes to go when Mr. O. R. Borra- daile, the Ec-sex secretary, who was act ing as captain of the Public Schools team, went in last in the second innings to join J. L . Beaumont. But Borradaile is an (xperienced old cricketer, and his partner kept his head so well that tbe two men played out time in triumph. FORE3T HILL v. SURREY V. WARWICKSHIRE. Played at the Oval on August 8, 9 and 10. Drawn. If the Surrey team had been as powerful as it was some years ago, one could have understood that Warwickshire might have been anxious to play for a draw from the commencement of the match, but it is difficult to understand why, on a perfect; wicket, against the moderate bowling of the present Surrey team, batsm in after batsman should have played a gime which can best be described as exceedingly cautious. The whole of the first day was taken up in scoring 2&9 runs for eight wickets. When the game began Fishwick rtquired 34 ruos to complete his thou and for the season, and tfntil he had accomplished this feat he played in a careful style which was quite foreign to his usual methods. As soon as these 34 runs were nude lie began to play his usual game, and hit J. N. Crawford for four 4’s in an over. Kinneir, who required 54 runs to reach the thousand, was exasperatii gly alow, but in the end he accomplished his object. Quaife was in a long time for his 34, but he is not in the best of health, and under the circumstances his innings w*s a most creditable perform inee. Later in tte day Byrne and Santall put on 59 in an hour, and their partnership was the only interesting feature of the day’s cricket. The ninth Warwickshire wicket produced 49 runs, and Surrty had to face a fairly big total. When Surrey went in Raphael and Hayward put up 64 for the first wicket, and the former survived until the total was 92, when, after playing excellent cricket for an hour and twenty-five minutes he was out for 65. Two more runs were m'ide before lunch, and then Abel and Hayes played beautiful cricket and took charge of the bowling. It was not until the total was 24i that Hayes was out for a splendid innings of 100, which took him two hours and three-quarters to compile. Abel was then not out 63, and going so well that everyone hoped he would reach his hundred for the first time this season. When stumps were drawn he was not out 77, for which he had been batting for about three hours. The total was 286 for three wickets, so that there seemed very little chance of finishing the match. But Abel was out soon after the game was resumcd yesterday, and although J. N. Crawford did his best to put a better appearance on the game, and k pt one end safe for a couple of hours, the tail could do nothing with the bowling of Har- greave, who, in the course of the morning, took five wickets for 23 runs. Warwickshire, with a balance of 1 run aga nst them, made 63 before lunch, and afterwards the rate ofscoring waa so slow that any hope of finishing the match was out of the question. Kinneir was tatting for two hours for his 46. Quaife and Glover made a prolonged stand, and long before they were separated all interest in the match was over. W a r w ic k sh ir e . First innings.
