Cricket 1904

324 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, A ug . 11, 1904. reminds one that the late Mr. Arthur Haygarth, despite the fact that he lived for many years about mid-way between Lord’s and the Oval, never saw Mr. Murdoch bat, whilst it has been stated that this year’s Oxford captain has not yet seen “ W .G .” in the flesh. ©omstponDena. The Editor does not hold himselj responsible tor the opinions of his correspondents. AN AUSTRALIAN CRITICISM.* To the Editor of C ricket . S ir , —I have read Cricket for several years —taking a great interest in the results of each English season—and have therefore noticed the reproduction in your issue of 28th April last of the menu cover for the dinner given to M.C.C. Australian team designed by the well-known cricket artist, Mr. G. Hillyard-Swinstead. The design is unique and appropriate of the merits of the (temporary) rescuers of “ The Ashes,” but there is, I think, a mistake in it easily dis cernible to one out here, and that is in connection with the fo u r stars in the left- hand background. Your explanation at the foot of the reproduction refers to these as representing “ The Stars of the Southern Hemisphere” in Hill, Trumper, Noble and Duff. Now, by these words and from the stars in the reproduction itself —which are marked to represent a cross—I take it that the artist had in view the world-renowned group of stars c.*lled ‘ ‘ The Southern Cross.” And now I wish to point out that this group is composed of five stars, as you will find on reference to any authority on this subject. The artist would have made his position secure by the inclusion of the filth star and representing it as Hugh Trumble, whose “ star ” in Test matches set with appropriate brilliancy when he finished with that *‘ hat trick ” in what seems, without doubt, to be his last Test match. Then there is another point. Do you not think that, on performances, Arnold should have occupied Hirst’s position with the banner ? And, finally, I would make one more com ment on the design, and this in the represen tation of the departure of the team for Australia—the embarkation was made on board a modern mail steamer from a dock, and not on a rather antiquated-looking “ sailer” from an ocean beach—although I grant that the latter, even if incorrect, would look more artistic.
