Cricket 1904
308 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, A ug . 4, 1904. bridge Town, in 1826; 51 for Suffolk v. M.C.C., in 1827 ; and 50 for M.C.C. v. Suffolk, in 1830. He was ODe of nine brothers, and, like the majority of the mem bers of the family, was actively identified with the West Kent Club, of which his father was President from 1831 to 1852. Herbert Jenner-Fust himself was Secretary to the Club as far back as 1825, and that he did not lose interest in its welfare after settling in Gloucester shire in 1864, is shown by the fact that he was President from 1882 until his death. Playing for the West Kent C.C. against the Koyal Artillery in 1839 he obtained all ten wickets of his opponents, nine being cleaned- bowled and the other hit-wicket, while in the following year, in a match between the same sides, he played an innings of 173. Being a friend of the Rev. J. Dolphin, he occasionally appeared for Norfolk, and he was a member of the county team which Lillywhite and Cobbett dismissed for eleven runs at Dereham in 1831. In his younger days Mr. Jenner-Fust generally wore a white beaver hat, knee breeches, and silk stockings when playing, and how remote the time is since he was at his best is emphasised by the fact that his name is to be found in Nyren and that he was President of the M.C.C. in 1833. To the end of his life he was greatly interested in the game, and as recently as 1830, when 74 years of age, assisted in a small match, in which he proved himself the most able cricketer in either team. Much more might be written about this famous player if space permitted, which it does not. Mr. Jenner-Fust was a most entertaining old gentleman, having a splendid memory, and possessing a bonhomie which was irre sistible. He lived to the great age of 98, but the Rev. W. H. Tucker, of the Eton X I. of 1818, died in 1901 aged 99, whilst Canon Beadon, wno “ managed” the Bullingdon Club at Oxford with Stephen Lushington (afterwards the famous judge), was 101 years and six months old at the time of his death in 1879. As I finish these notes a piece of splendid news comes to hand from Australia. Mr. J. C. Davis, who, a few years ago brought out a most interesting Annual, of which only three issues were published, writes to m e: “ I hope to bring it out again in October, 1905. It was really not through what I regard as want of satisfactory support that the book was allowed to drop.” As I have said, this is splendid news, for Mr. Davis is Australia’s premier critic, and a model editor.
