Cricket 1904

306 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g . 4, 1904 pointed out that Mr. Spooner is high up in the averages—he was fourteenth in the list on Monday, and for a short time held the first place—but it does not follow that he might not do even better if he exercised his natural bent. It must be remarked that when he was at school, and when he met with his first successes in county cricket he was not a hitter pure and simple, but a man who could hit very hard, and could keep the ball on the ground. He possessed the imper turbability without which it is impossible for a man to become a famous player, and although he sometimes left his ground, he knew what he was about when he did so. Not all the famous players in the world have been fast footed, and although the art of moving the feet seems little cultivated nowadays, there are still many famous men who owe much of their success to their ability to shift their feet according to circum stances. One cannot help thinking that Mr. Spooner might be another Stoddart, who, when he played his true game, was as much dreaded by the Australians as by the bowlers of the weakest county in Eng land. But Mr. Spooner w very young still, and as time goes on he iaay develop powers which will place him on a level with the giants of all time. His great opportunity will come next year when the Australians visit us, for it is on a man’s ability to cope with Australian bowling that his reputation really rests, and it is the hope of every cricketer that Spooner as well as C. B. Fry will not be found wanting when our visitors come. It is quite certain that when the time comes to select the next England eleven, no one will suggest that his fielding is not up to international form. Mr. Spooner has two brothers who were both in the Haileybury eleven. A. F. Spooner, of whom mention was made a short time ago in Cricket , shows great promise, but can only spare time to play on Saturday afternoons for the Liverpool Club. The eldest brother, A. H ., is in the Army, and plays in the team of his regiment. The father of these three young cricketers was himself a player, and represented his college at Oxford in rowing as well as at cricket. W .
