Cricket 1904
J u ly 28, 1904. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 293 in Langdon kept wicket, and a substitute fielded for Board, who had a slight sunstroke, and the new wicketkeeper had not had sufficient practice to be able to keep down the byes. Denton hatted exceed- fngly well for Yorkshire m a steldy way. and Hirst sndRhode, both played well, the latter b.log not out 37 when stumps were drawn with the total at 231for sevenwickets. On Friday Lord Hawke played a most useful innings, and Yorkshire h.d a lead ofJ3. Si their second innings most of the Gloucestershire men hit hard. Jefsop was again in for about half an hour and this time scored 48. Thomas played fUst-class cricket for his 75. and Lsngdon and Board both played in a very attractive manner ; on the other hand Sellick. who went in early, played a very steady a n d cautious game for three hours for 40 an innings of the greatest sfrvice to his side. Yorkshire had to make 244 to win. and before the day’s play ended scored 7 runs without losing a wicket. The total had been carried to 47 for one wicket on Saturday when rain came down, and the game was abandoned. G lo u c e ste rs h ir e . First inning.. . ESSEX. Played at Old Trafford on July 21, 22 and 23. Lancashire won by ten wickets. The wicket in this match was somewhat fiery, and as the Lancashire bowlers were far more capable of making use of it than iheir opponents, their side had much the best of the game. At the same time, luck had no small share in the result, and if Essex had been fortunate instead of unfortunate the Lancashire first innings would have only produced a small total. As it was, Lancashire began by losing Maclaren for a single, and then Spooner and Tyldesley made such a valuable stand, despite the way in which the ball occasionally got up, that 16« runs were scored for the second wicket in an hour and forty minutes. Tyldesley played very bright and attractive cricket, while Spooner showed great caution and steadiness. After this partnership there was such a change in the fortunes of tbe game that six wickets were down for 20ft. Sharp at d A. H. Hornby then began a long and productive partnership by demoralising the field by means of short runs ; they were together for an hour and three qua>t*rs, during which they increased the total by 177 runs. Thus, thanks to four men, Lanca shire had a fine total when the innings came to an end. Essex had to bat for less than a quarter of an hour, but they were at sea with the bowling of Ker mode and Brearley, and lost Fane, Sewell and Keig win for 26. Heavy rain fell during the night, and the ball kicked more than ever. It was veiy difficult to make runs against good bowling, and McGahey alone succeeded in scoring over 20 in the first innings. As Essex were 322 runs behind they had to follow on, and when the day’s play ended tbeir total in the second innings was 303 for seven wickets, so that they were only 19 runs on. For a time the batsmen could do very little better than in the first innings, and three wickets fell to Brearley for 32 runs. But gradually ihe wicket was becoming easier, and when it was too late to save tbeir side batsmen had some chance to distinguish themselves. The turning point of the innings came during the partnership of McGahey and Carpenter, who deserve ihe very greatest credit for putting on 76 runs at a time when the bowlers were in such great form. After their partnership ended the bowlers were becoming a little tired, while the wicket did not help them much, and the Ersex men gave an excellent account of themselves. Keigwin p'ayed a fine defensive innings, and late in tbe day Freeman batted so finely as to raise great hopes for his future. When slumps were drawn Keigwin was not out 64. On Saturday Eeeex saved the innings defeat by ft runs. L ancashire . NOTTS, v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at Leicester on July 21, 22 and 23. Abandoned. The cricket on the first day of this match was full of interest, for although the wicket was good the bowling was never mastered, and all through the day the batsmen had to fight for their luns. Leicester shire were still without Knight, while R. T. Crawford and de Trafford were also absent. Their Bide hardly made the best use of the wicket, but King and Wood both played excellent cricket while, after a break down in the batting, Gill and Odell hit in a determined manner. Before stumps were drawn Notts lost Jones and W. Gunn and the total was 89. Iremonger was not out 46. On Tuesday the cricket was still interestirg. Gill bowled a little short, and the tall got up awk wardly, with the result thit the batsmen were at sea with him and he took seven wickets for 63. Iremonger increased 1is overnight total to 80, after a stay at the wickets of two hours and three-quarters in all. Leicestershire with a useful lead of 36 scored 259 for five wickets before stumps were drawn, and were thus 296 runs on. King and Wood again played excellent cricket and their partnership for the first wicket produced 139runs. At the end of the day Coe was not • out 43. On ► aturday Coe after batting for two hours was dismissed when within seven runs of his hundred. Notts required 400 runs to win, and when they had lost Jones, Iremonerer and two of the three Gunns for 111, rain came to their rescue and deprived Leicester shire of what looked like a certain victoiy.
