Played at Trent Bridge on July 18, 19 and 20* Gloucestershire won by an innings and 1 run. On a perfect Trent Bridge wicket G. L. Jessop delighted the spectators for aVout two hours and a quarter on Monday. He went to the wickets soon after lunch, when the Notts bowlers had 1>st much of their stiog owing to some brilliant hitting by Wrathall and Board, who put up 154 for the first wicket in an hour and ten minutes. His first partner was Brownlee, the Oxford Blue, who was in such form that he made 57 while Jessop was making 54 in three quarters of an hour, the partnership producing 118 runs. Brownlee’s innings was admirable in every way, and he was only an hour and a quarter in scoring his 94. Jessop continued to play a wonderful game, not .hitting at everything, but choosing his ball, and when at last he was dismissed his score was 206, which had taken him two hours and twenty minutes to compile. At the end of the day the Gloucestershire score was 5^1 for nine wickets. This was increased ty 45 on the next morning. Notts began well enough by putting up 100 for the first wicket, 71 of thege being made by Jones, who played beautiful cricket. Iremocger did not play one of his long innings, and of the rest only Day and Hardstaff made runs. Notts had to follow on, with arrears of 394 to wipe off, and when 32 had been scored without loss rain stopped play. When the game was resumed the total was taken to 122 without loss, Iremonger being not out 50 and Jones not out 67. These iwo men played brilliant cricket yesterday, and their partnership produced 303 runs for the first wicket in four hours and a half before they were separated. After such a splendid beginning Notts seemed safe enough from defeat, but Spry brought about a break down in the bitting, and Gloucestershire won a great and unexpected victory. G loucestershire . WARWICKSHIRE Played at Leicester on July 18, 19 and 20. Warwickshire won by 181 runs. The Warwickshire team was seen to advantage on Monday, scoring 36» for the oss of nine wickets. The best and highest innings of the day was the 113 by T. S. Fishwick, who was batting for two hours. On 'luesday the Leicest irshire batting was disappointing, and when the innings came to an end, 205 runs tehind, WarwicKshire preferred to go in again, instead of making their opponents follow-on. When stumps were drawn the total was 142for four wickets, Quaife not out 71 and Lilley not out 12, so that Warwickshire were 347 runs on. Quaife played fine cricket yesterday, and Whittle hit very h«rd indeed, y mong his hits being two 6’s ; he reached his 50 in thirty-five minutes. Leicestershire required 485 runs to win with five hours before them, and although they aid well at first, it eventually became a question whether they would play out time, and Warwickshire were victorious just before six o’clock.
