On a perfect wicket Surrey batted all the first day of this match, scoring 455 runs for eight wickets, although they lost Baker and Hayward for 16 runs between them. But the partnership which followed between Hayes and Raphael quite altered the appear ance of the game, and it was not until the two men had increased the score by 192 in about two hours that Hayes was dismis-ed for a brilliant 94, the be*t innings of the day. Raphael made the highest score, 111, and there was very little fault to find with his cricket; he was at the wickets for two hours and forty minutes, and did not long survive Hayes. Abel again appeared in the team, and batted exceedingly well for two hours and a quarter, during which he showed much of the form which made him famous. Shep pard, Lees, Stedman, aud Gooder all p’ayed good cricket. Wh?n stumps were drawn Stedman was not out V8, and Gooder not out 21. On the next morning Gooder was out in the first over, but Leveson-Gower, the Surrey captain, put himself in last, and made a splendid stand for the last wicket. He and Stedman took charge of the bowling, and, makingruns quickly, put on 89 runs. With the large total of 614 to face Worcestershire made such a sturdy resistance to the bowling that when stumps were drawn their score was 338 for nine wickets. Arnold played a great innings, and Foster was in brilliant form, although he was missed more than once. Good cricket was also shown by Simpson-Hayward and Gaukrodger. Lees had to bear the brunt of the bowling against a wind, and kept an excellent length. On Saturday the last wicket fell without any aodition being made to the score, and W< rcestershire followed on. For a time there seemed a probability that Surrey would have time to win, for three wickets were down for 60, and even after Arnold and Wheldon added 106 for the fourth wicket, there was still a chance for Surrey, for three more wickets fell rapidly. But Simpson- Hayward then offered a stubborn resistance to the bowling, and for the most part contented himself with keeping up his wicket, although occasionally he made a tine drive. He received efficient assistance from Bird, and by the time that these two men were parted they had saved their side from defeat.
